Sloth Goes Places - Georgia

Sloth Goes Places is a feature where I share books I have tracked from previous Literary Escapes reading challenge hosted by Escape With Dollycas Into a Good Book.

Today we are looking at books set in ....

Georgia

Like most states on the east coast, I have driven through Georgia as I made the drive between Florida and New Jersey for many years, but to the best of my knowledge, I do not believe I have ever visited. I do have family there now, so maybe one of these days, I will make my way there.

The Mostly True Story of Tanner and Louise
 by Colleen Oakley
Published by Berkley Books on March 28, 2023
Age/Genres: Contemporary, Fiction
five-stars
Goodreads

Twenty-one-year-old Tanner Quimby needs a place to live. Preferably one where she can continue sitting around in sweatpants and playing video games nineteen hours a day. Since she has no credit or money to speak of, her options are limited, so when an opportunity to work as a live-in caregiver for an elderly woman falls into her lap, she takes it.

One slip on the rug. That’s all it took for Louise Wilt’s daughter to demand that Louise have a full-time nanny living with her. Never mind that she can still walk fine, finish her daily crossword puzzle, and pour the two fingers of vodka she drinks every afternoon. Bottom line -- Louise wants a caretaker even less than Tanner wants to be one.

The two start off their living arrangement happily ignoring each other until Tanner starts to notice things—weird things. Like, why does Louise keep her garden shed locked up tighter than a prison? And why is the local news fixated on the suspect of one of the biggest jewelry heists in American history who looks eerily like Louise? And why does Louise suddenly appear in her room, with a packed bag at 1 a.m. insisting that they leave town immediately?

Thus begins the story of a not-to-be-underestimated elderly woman and an aimless young woman who—if they can outrun the mistakes of their past—might just have the greatest adventure of their lives.

I LOVED this book! It gave off a serious Thelma & Louise vibe, and I am always down for an unlikely friendship. Tanner & Louise blew my expectations out of the water. What a fun and fantastic road trip I had with these two! The Mostly True Story of Tanner & Louise had it all – great characters, mystery, shenanigans, female friendship, humor, and heart. This was a buddy caper which grabbed me from page one and never let go. I absolutely adored this book!

Slightly South of Simple
 by Kristy Woodson Harvey
Published by Gallery Books on April 25, 2017
Age/Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Fiction
four-half-stars
Goodreads

From the next “major voice in Southern fiction” (New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand) comes the first in an all-new series chronicling the journeys of three sisters and their mother—and a secret from their past that has the potential to tear them apart and reshape their very definition of what it means to be a family.

Caroline Murphy swore she’d never set foot back in the small Southern town of Peachtree Bluff; she was a New York girl born and bred and the worst day of her life was when, in the wake of her father’s death, her mother selfishly forced her to move—during her senior year of high school, no less—back to that hick-infested rat trap where she'd spent her childhood summers. But now that her marriage to a New York high society heir has fallen apart in a very public, very embarrassing fashion, a pregnant Caroline decides to escape the gossipmongers with her nine-year-old daughter and head home to her mother, Ansley.

Ansley has always put her three daughters first, especially when she found out that her late husband, despite what he had always promised, left her with next to nothing. Now the proud owner of a charming waterfront design business and finally standing on her own two feet, Ansley welcomes Caroline and her brood back with open arms. But when her second daughter Sloane, whose military husband is overseas, and youngest daughter and successful actress Emerson join the fray, Ansley begins to feel like the piece of herself she had finally found might be slipping from her grasp. Even more discomfiting, when someone from her past reappears in Ansley's life, the secret she’s harbored from her daughters their entire lives might finally be forced into the open.

Exploring the powerful bonds between sisters and mothers and daughters, this engaging novel is filled with Southern charm, emotional drama, and plenty of heart.

I love family dramas, and this was a good one. The family dynamic was actually wonderful. These women were very close. Maybe due to the loss of their father on 9-11, or maybe for other reasons, but they shared a genuinely strong sisterly bond and were there to support each other in their time of need. This was a warm and wonderful tale of secrets, family, and love, and a fantastic start to a fabulous series.

The Only Game in Town
 by Lacie Waldon
Published by G.P. Putnam's Sons on March 21. 2023
Age/Genres: Contemporary, Fiction
four-half-stars
Goodreads

One small town, one big prize, one handsome stranger...

Nothing ever changes in Redford, Georgia. That's what freelance editor Jess Reid loves about her hometown--and part of what keeps her from leaving. Content taking care of her father, a car mechanic who singlehandedly raised her after her mom skipped out, Jess is resigned to a safe, unremarkable existence...until Jasper Wilhelm, the town's eccentric benefactor, dies suddenly and leaves behind the opportunity of a lifetime.

Financial advisor Carter Barclay has been too busy to visit his grandfather in Redford, but he's heard countless stories about the town and its zany residents from Jasper. A small, insular town in Georgia is the last place Carter expects to be spending his summer--but it seems his grandfather had one final trick up his sleeve.

At the funeral, it's revealed that Jasper has devised a massive, high-stakes game for the people of Redford, with the winning duo taking home his entire fortune. The catch? He's already taken the liberty of pairing them up. As tensions of all kinds rise between Jess and Carter, and the life-changing prize looms closer, the two must decide what they're willing to risk to change their lives. A love story full of spirit and hijinks, The Only Game in Town is a funny, quirky homage to the people we get to call home.

I would like to thank the fine residents of Redford for a rollicking good time. I loved this premise – locals competing for Jasper Wilhelm’s millions. From the very beginning, it was easy to see that Jasper had an agenda. His first order of business was to reunite those who had fallen out with each other by pairing them together in the competition. I love when someone can work that sort of magic from beyond the grave. I am so glad I had an opportunity to visit this lovely little town. I had a great time reading about all the crazy challenges while also getting to see this great cast of characters fall in love, experience personal growth, mend friendships, and form some found families. All this fun was topped off with a precious ending that brought on the happy tears and left me feeling warm and happy.

  1. Oh boy, I've been through and stayed in GA countless times - just due to proximity. The Husband was stationed there (Albany) the last two years he was in the Navy, and my step-daughter lives in the outskirts of Atlanta. Savannah is one of my favorite cities ever. Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda was set in GA (Atlanta) and it was fun to read about certain locations I knew.
