Can't Wait Wednesday!

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

I am combining CWW with Books From the Backlog hosted by Carole at Carole's Random Life in Books. This will allow me to feature some newly "rediscovered" books, which I plan on reading, alongside a new release.

This week I can't wait for

Sylvia's Second Act
 by Hillary Yablon
Published by Pamela Dorman Books on March 12, 2024
Age/Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Fiction
Goodreads

Her husband’s cheating on her. She hates Boca. Sylvia is mad and she isn’t going to take it anymore. She’s moving back north, to the city of her dreams—with her best friend, Evie, in tow. Think a screwball comedy featuring a sophisticated Thelma and Louise with martinis in hand . . .

When sixty-three-year-old Sylvia finds her husband in bed with the floozy of their Boca retirement community, she’s shocked and furious . . . at first. By the time her head stops spinning, Sylvia realizes that actually, this isn’t what she wants anymore anyway.

So she enlists her best friend, the glamorous older widow Evie, to join her in setting up a new life in Manhattan. Sylvia’s ex-husband may have lost her life savings, but Sylvia and Evie are scrappy and determined, unopposed to pawning jewelry and roughing it in tiny apartments. And before long, Sylvia signs on to revive her decades-old wedding planning business with a former professional rival. Sylvia has a lot to prove, and beneath it all, she can’t help but Will she ever be able to get back into the dating game?

Sylvia doesn't want to be twenty-five or thirty again. Her age gives her wisdom, experience, and perspective. A career, sex, fun, and a new romance—her entire second act is stretched out in front of her, beckoning to her. It’s her time, and watch out, world, Sylvia is coming!

I love seeing older characters in books. I guess as I age, it's nice to see the main characters I read about age with me, but it's also about knowing that life is full of second chances and new beginnings no matter how old you are. Sylvia sounds like an incredible character who embraces her age. She strikes me as a survivor who I will love cheering for.

The Brothers Hawthorne
 by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Published by Little, Brown Books FYR on August 29, 2023
Age/Genres: Young Adult, Mystery
Goodreads

Four brothers. Two missions. One explosive read. Jennifer Lynn Barnes returns to the world of her #1 bestselling Inheritance Games trilogy, and the stakes have never been higher.

Grayson Hawthorne was raised as the heir apparent to his billionaire grandfather, taught from the cradle to put family first. Now the great Tobias Hawthorne is dead and his family disinherited, but some lessons linger. When Grayson’s half-sisters find themselves in trouble, he swoops in to do what he does best: take care of the problem—efficiently, effectively, mercilessly. And without getting bogged down in emotional entanglements.

Jameson Hawthorne is a risk-taker, a sensation-seeker, a player of games. When his mysterious father appears and asks for a favor, Jameson can’t resist the challenge. Now he must infiltrate London’s most exclusive underground gambling club, which caters to the rich, the powerful, and the aristocratic, and win an impossible game of greatest stakes. Luckily, Jameson Hawthorne lives for impossible.

Drawn into twisted games on opposite sides of the globe, Grayson and Jameson—with the help of their brothers and the girl who inherited their grandfather’s fortune—must dig deep to decide who they want to be and what each of them will sacrifice to win.

I love this series. This is different because the big mystery was resolved after the first three books, but I am happy that Barnes has more stories to tell. I will admit that I have put this book off. It clocks in at 480 pages, and you all know how I am with longer books, but I could not resist. The world of the Hawthorne brothers will forever fascinate me, and I am up for as many adventures as I can get with them.

  4. I like reading older characters too. So many romances have 20 something women so it's nice when I can more relate to an older character.

  5. My husband has recently decided to get back into reading and just made it through his first novel in several years (I know, how is he not a reader when he's married to me?!). We decided to read something together next, so I'm trying to convince him to choose something from my own backlog. I think we may settle on an old Michael Crichton novel that's been on my shelf for decades!

    1. That is great! I think movie adaptations are a good way to ease non-readers into reading again. I do tend to see books for adaptations having soaring sales before and after the release of the show/movie.
