Sundays with Sam - The Sunday Post

Sundays with Sam is a combination of Sunday Post hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Tynga's Reviews.

My Week in Review

Happy Sunday! The Sunday Post of 2023. This wasn't the best year, but it wasn't the worst. I hope everyone made some great memories in 2023, and I wish you all the best for the upcoming year. I haven't done anything for New Year's since 1994. Is anyone celebrating in a fun way?

Last week was a blur. Everyone in my house was sick. I am still feeling pretty miserable. Only my father went to the doctor, and he had a sinus infection and bronchitis. We all have coughs, stuffy heads, etc. General misery. At least I worked my three days last week from home. If I had to go to the office, I would have had to call out, and my team of five would be down to one.

My daughter left Friday. It was tragic, as always. We didn't get to do much since we were all sick. I did buy my ticket to visit her in March, so only a few months. It will be a short trip, since it is to see her dance showcase, but we will have one day to do something together.

My aunt and uncle visited this past week, and they left a small gift for me. When I opened it, I was in tears. Back when my parents were downsizing, moving from a large home to a townhome, they let every visitor take some mugs from my mother's collection. My aunt and uncle had taken one that was my grandparents, and that's what was in the gift bag. I remember my grandparents had a whole set and always drank from them, so it's lovely to have it back. Below is a picture of the mug with the gift from my daughter. I laughed when I saw the snuggi-thing.

On the Blog

I usually do two weeks of Best Of posts, but I didn't feel like I had enough categories. I was able to honor almost every five-star book I read though.

Let's Discuss

Tis the season, so all I really have to share is lots about reading challenges. Below are some great round ups if you are looking for some challenges.

Stacking the Shelves

The end of the year is slow, but I did buy a few sale books.

Read Last Week

I thought I would read more this week, but being sick and it being the holidays, I just finished my TBR. The Last Love Note emerged as my favorite. It was very emotional and wonderful. I knew I would love it! I successfully skipped from book 1 to book 4 in the Peach Tree Bluff series, and that was another winner for me. I love this family, and the strong community aspect made this such a lovely read. Canadian Boyfriend deserves a mention, too. I cannot say I bought into the "conflict", but I adored the characters, the romance, and their personal stories so much.

  1. Aw, sister in misery! I've been sick since Christmas Eve...I hope everyone in your household gets well soon! And...is there a single item/piece of clothes that doesn't get the sloth treatment? 😂

    Have a great year Sam!

    1. Maybe we caught it together. Well, I hope you are on the mend. This is terrible. We just find the sloth things. It's a super power. Happy New Year to you, Roberta!

  2. I am so sorry that everyone was sick Sam! Now that is a very lovely gift from your aunt and uncle! 2023 was not the best nor the worst for me either. Let's hope that 2024 will be brilliant for both of us!

  3. I hope you feel better soon! I'm also doing nothing for New Years. Actually, I'm going to be reading for New Year. I have to finish the books I'm partway through to hit my Goodreads goal.

  4. I've somehow avoided all the sickness that everyone around me seems to be getting, all with similar cold like symptoms. I had a quick trip to San Antonio to spend Xmas eve with my family before driving back the next morning to spend the holiday with my Husband's family. 2023 was a mixed bag, with unexpected health issues and a couple weeks with my husband in the ICU. I'm definitely ready to turn the page on this year and start again. Wishing you a great start to 2024!

  5. Oh, man, I'm so sorry you're all sick! I hope you're all feeling better soon. We did New Year's Eve in Atlantic City one year and that's the craziest we'll probably ever get. We have plans to order Thai food and sit on the couch tonight!

    1. It could be worse. At least I had a few days off and worked from home. I have been super lazy this weekend though.

  8. I hardly ever celebrate like crazy. New Years Eve I honestly just get blog stuff ready for the new year and mostly just read and relax haha but New Years our family does a special ham dinner and play cards for a couple of hours and watch some football.

  9. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Hope you have a great year. I swear everyone isn't feeling their best right now. It should be the happiest time of the year, why do we have to not feel good physically too??? I really need to get on the Sawyer Bennett and soon

    1. I think you would like Bennett's books. I am a fan of her hockey romances, but she has some other kinds of books too. Some suspense and even one's set in a "club". Those are not my speed, but you might like them.

  10. We usually stay in for New Year's Eve as well. I'm so sorry everyone was sick. My youngest got sick Christmas Eve and it's truly the worst time to be sick. That mug is precious.

  11. So sorry you've been sick! I hope the worst has passed. How nice to have your grandparent's mug back. And the sloth snuggi is epic. :) I meant to read Ready or Not in December but never got to it. It will probably be my next read. I'll need something lighter after this Kristin Hannah book! Hope you enjoy Bain!

    1. These lingering viruses are never fun, but it could be worse, I guess. I really liked Ready or Not, but I saw it more as women's fiction which I have no problem with. The pregnancy is a huge focus in the story too. It was something I related to , but I worry that other readers will be frustrated. It was fun and funny though, so it checks off that lighter read for you.

  13. It sucks when the whole family is sick! Especially since your daughter was out visiting. I hope you and the rest of your family feel better, Sam! Sentimental gifts are so lovely.

That Kristy Woodson Harvey looks good to me and I've been wanting to try her since I've seen you feature her books. The City Baker's Guide to Country Living looks good too! Happy New Year, Sam!

    1. It was tough going back to the office. I was miserable all day. My daughter was sick too. She spent days in bed. Harvey won me over with Songbirds. It just have everything I love in a book. A bit of romance, friendship, family, community - I live for this stuff. I have read two more of her books since this one, and they were great too. I just started City Baker. So far, I find the MC's voice great. She's amusing me. Happy New Year to you, too!

  14. Happy New Year, Sam! I'm sorry to hear that everyone was sick during the holidays though. Sadly, I'm in the same boat right now and have been WFH for the past 3 days feeling miserable. 😭 I hope you're feeling better now though and that everyone is recovering at home! That mug is beautiful and that Sloth Snuggie looks so comfortable and cute. 😍 I hope you enjoy all of these books and have a wonderful 2024 ahead full of joy, success and all the amazing books!

    1. You poor dear! I hope you get well soon. I couldn't take the time off at the end of the year, but with my counterpart back today, I called out to recoup. I have been miserable.

  15. Happy new year! I was also sick over christmas so there has definitely been something going about. It meant a quieter break but I fell sick the week before christmas so by the time I was working Thursday I was practically better, i just have a cough I can't shift. I'm sorry it meant you couldn't do much with your daughter home though. What a lovely gift from your aunt! It's always so nice to have something like that to bring back memories but you also probably didn't think you'd see it again.
