Six Degrees of Separation - November 2023

Six Degrees of Separation is hosted by Kate at booksaremyfavoriteandbest. A book is selected each month as the starting point for us to link to six other books. I go a bit rouge by selecting my own book from the previous months’ Five Star Friday, but still maintain the spirit of the meme.

This Month's Book

By the New York Times bestselling author of Just Haven't Met You Yet, a downtrodden twenty-six-year-old wakes up to the life she’s always wanted, but is it really a dream come true?

At twenty-six, Lucy Young is tired. Tired of fetching coffees for senior TV producers, tired of going on disastrous dates, and definitely tired of living in a damp flat share with flatmates who never buy toilet roll. She could quit her job for a better living, but she’s not ready to give up on her dreams. Not just yet. After another diabolical date lands her in a sudden storm and no money for bus fare, Lucy finds herself seeking shelter in a tiny shop, where she stumbles upon a curious wishing machine. Pushing her last coin into the slot, Lucy closes her eyes and wishes with everything she’s got: Please, let me skip to the good part of my life.

When she wakes the next morning to a handsome man, a ring on her finger, a high-powered job, and storybook perfect little boy and baby girl, Lucy can’t believe this is real—especially when she looks in the mirror, and staring back is her own forty-something face. Has she really skipped ahead to the future she’s always wanted, or has she simply forgotten a huge chunk of her life? And as Lucy begins to embrace this new life and new relationships, she’ll have to ask herself: Can she go back, and if so, does she want to?

  1. In The Good Part, Lucy wished to skip to the good part of her life which resulted in her taking a little time travel trip to the future. This aspect of time travel was also present in Oona Out of Order
  2. Oona travels through time, as indicated in the title, out of order. She goes both forwards and backwards through time. In This Time Tomorrow, Alice goes back to her teen years.
  3. This Time Tomorrow does involve traveling back in time, but it's to a specific day which I guess makes it sort of modified time loop book. Another great time loop book was See You Yesterday
  4. See You Yesterday is of the Groundhog Day variety time loop books which made me think of The Map of Tiny Perfect Things
  5. Tiny Perfect Things was a phenomenal novella which left a big impression on me because of what the character had to face in order to break out of the loop. This is usually a big part of all time loop books. It was rather heartbreaking in Tiny Perfect Things, but rather hilarious in In a Holidaze
  6. Holidaze was such a fun and festive book which reminded me of The Christmas Wish which was full of lots of holiday cheer, over and over again.

  1. I'm a fan of well written time travel! I'd probably explore the alternate time line take to make my own connections. The Midnight Library and Blake Crouch's Recursion come to mind.

    1. I loved The Midnight Library. Haig left me with so much to think about. I had seen a lot of good things about Recursion.

  3. You always do so well with making the connections between books. I just finished The Good Part and really enjoyed the time travel aspect. It actually reminded me of that old Tom Hanks' film, Big.

    1. I din't know if I just wasn't looking for them, but I find I am reading more and more books dealing with time manipulation in some way which I am really enjoying. Holidaze was such a fun one!
