Top Ten Tuesday - It's a Job

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is...

It's a Job!

This week we were supposed to talk about bookish jobs we would do for free, but I decided to twist it. Do you ever read books and find that these characters have some very interesting jobs? Well, I do, and today, I am sharing some that are somewhat unique or interest me.

  1. Amazing Grace Adams by Fran Littlewood - Grace, a gifted linguist, was a translator. However, earlier in the story, she was a presenter who talked about words that had no direct translation.
  2. The Love Plot by Samantha Young - Star had two jobs. One was as a children's party entertainer, the other, was as a place holder. She would be paid to stand in line for people.
  3. The Museum of Ordinary People by Mike Gayle - Jess may have been working as a receptionist, but she was a trained museum curator and happily took on the task of caring for the Museum of Ordinary People.
  4. The Takedown by Carlie Walker - Sydney was a CIA agent who took on a job with the FBI to investigate her brother-in-law to be.
  5. Wreck the Halls by Tessa Bailey - Melody was a rare book restorer who specialized in young adult books because she wanted to care for the books that gave her comfort in her youth.
  1. Tom Lake by Ann Patchett - Lara's family ran an orchard. I have thing for farms.
  2. The Chase by Victoria Denault - Frankie grew up in the Formula One racing world and took over as team principle when her father retired.
  3. Bright Lights, Big Christmas by Mary Kay Andrews - The Tollivers owned a Christmas tree farm. They sold trees and made wreaths and other decor from the greenery.
  4. The Summer of Songbirds by Kristy Woodson Harvey - June owned and ran a summer camp. I can see this as being somewhat stressful, but also fun and rewarding.
  5. Cup of Silver Linings by Karen Hawkins - Ava owned a landscaping and speciality tea business which later expanded to a tea house. She grew, mixed, and brewed teas.

Come across any interesting jobs while reading?

  1. I love taking note of odd jobs in books. Of these, the Christmas tree farm is my favorite. It's something my daughter and I have thought of doing with our land.

    1. I have read several books featuring Christmas tree farms (Lovelight, for one). That's amazing that you have considered this.

  2. This twist makes me think of Sariah Wilson's The Seat Filler about someone who sat in seats at award shows when the celebrities left them for a time. I love this twist!

    1. My daughter had friends who did that in college. I never read about it in a book though. Fun!

  3. I wouldn't be any good at growing tea, but I'd be happy to brew tea for Ava (Cup of Silver Linings). And be her taste tester. :)

  4. Love your list of jobs there. I really love seeing what you listed there. A tea house would be so much to work in, I agree.

  7. These are interesting-sounding jobs! I would totally be a placeholder. It would be a great way to get a lot of reading done and get paid at the same time.

    Happy TTT!

    1. And that is exactly what Star did - she read books as she waited.

  9. This is a fun twist! I would so love to run a Christmas Tree Farm. At least if it was located somewhere pretty. Like the mountains. Ha!

    1. I think it would be fun. Hard work, but fun. It could take a turn like the pumpkin patches/apple orchards do too with festivities.

  10. These are really interesting jobs! I have a thing for orchards/farms too! Love all things growing. Restoring old books is another one that grabs my attention. Yes, I like the idea of working for the FBI. I started The Takedown but then realized I needed to read a couple books first before. Looking forward to it. Great list here, Sam!

    1. Considering I am not a big outdoors type, my penchant for farms and such is amazing. Well, I do hope you enjoy The Takedown when you get back to it

  11. I want to be a line place holder. Can you imagine how many books you could read standing in a Taylor Swift line or something? I also love the museum one! This was a fun take on this topic!
