Sundays with Sam - The Sunday Post

Sundays with Sam is a combination of Sunday Post hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and Stacking the Shelves hosted by Tynga's Reviews.

My Week in Review

I hope everyone had a great week. It's been a tough one here. We heard back about dad's PET scan, and it was not good news. He goes to the oncologist tomorrow, so I will know more. It's so unfair. There's this myth about 5-years post cancer, but my dad is over 8-years post, and it's back. I am trying not to be a sad sack as I am not the one who is ill, but it's hard when I remember the last time. I started reading Love Interest the day I found out, and the main character mentions that her mother died from lung cancer. Then, I was read A Winter in New York, and that character's mother died from cancer too. I don't like this timing at all.

Anyhow, is anyone else looking forward to trying the pumpkin spice frosty at Wendy's? It will be available on Tuesday, and I happen to have the day off. No doubt I will be picking one up.

There is cool weather on the horizon for NJ which is another plus for me. The first few days of high 90s wasn't the worst. It was pretty dry and overcast, but Thursday was tough. I won't be sad to see summer end.

Stacking the Shelves

It was a slow book week. I mean, I had five library holds come through, but only one invite. This book is actually on my TBR, so I am leaning towards downloading. A grumpy hero and a fauxmance make it sound like fun to me. It's also described as a nod to the swoony rom-coms from the 90s. I always liked those too. Seems promising.

Read Last Week

So many stars, right? The best of the week was my throwback book, The Measure. I know a lot of people will like all the complicated, societal stuff, but I loved the the characters and their connections. I was so moved by their stories, and I really appreciated that the author took the story forward several years, so I could learn more about the characters' futures. The book also left me with a lot to think about, and I felt the author did a wonderful exploring all sides of this situation.

My reading took a bit of hit due to my mental state, so I made The Burnout my first book this week. I could us a boost, and Kinsella always makes me smile.

I am trying to check off more states for my reading challenge. Something Rising will help me fulfill the Indiana prompt. The jury is out right now since it's early in the book, but it may be too grim for me.

  1. Ugh, I hate that the news wasn't more positive, Sam. Sending you all kind of hugs - and good thoughts for your dad.

A pumpkin spice Frosty, you say? Time to start stalking the Wendy's down the street.

I hope this week brings some good reads, but I understand when your focus is elsewhere.

  2. oh no I am so sorry to hear that darling. Will definitely keep your father in my thoughts and prayers. I know personally how rough it can be seeing a close family member battle that. Out of all the things I want a cure for, cancer would be the one.

I am so ready for anything pumpkin. We have a smoothie place that does a pumpkin smoothie and its amazing. I will have to try out the Wendy's one though.

  5. I'm so sorry to hear about your dad! My mother passed away from breast cancer when I was 21, and it was a long, long time before I could read anything with cancer in the story. There's been so many advancements with treatments since then with all kinds of cancer so hopefully he can beat it back! My thoughts are with you and your family, Sam!

I didn't know Josie Silver had a new one. It looks good! I just added it.

    1. I am sorry to hear you lost your mom so young. I feel lucky we have had these eight years, but I am greedy. My dad was 70 when his mother passed. How lucky! Silver's new book was a bright spot for sure. Fun and sweet and tugged my heartstrings.

  7. I'm so sorry Sam. I lost my mom to cancer when I was young and now Kevin's dad has gone through treatment and his last scan just came up clear. That's got to feel like a sucker punch after 8 years. He beat once and can do the same again! Even though I know how tough it is on everyone.

I haven't had a frosty in YEARS so I didn't know about the pumpkin one. I love pumpkin things though (I just had a fall spice coffee and pumpkin donut this morning at the farmers market) so I will check it out.

    1. I am glad to hear that Kevin's dad came back clear. Wonderful news! Unfortunately, the cancer is now in the good lung. We hope they can give us a bit of time and that he doesn't suffer. It was tough last time.

The pumpkin frosty is brand new, and I am super excited. It's been years since I had a frosty, but I remember them fondly.

  9. Sam, I'm so sorry to hear about your dad! We've gone through similar with my mom, and it is never easy news. Just spend the time you need with him and try to keep as positive of an outlook as you can. I know that's easier said than done. It also doesn't help that there so many books that feature cancer as a plot point. When my mom was going through chemo, we happened to watch the movie Step Mom. It was not a good choice haha.

    1. Never easy. We are just hoping that it's not painful. It's crazy how many books have characters with parents who died from cancer. Or, am I just more sensitive to it now? Step Mom!!! That had to be tough.

  10. Oh Sam, I'm so sorry to hear your dad's test results didn't bring good news. That's so hard. I'm sending hugs and positive vibes your way. It seems like every book has a character who has a relative who's had cancer. Sometimes I wish they'd just pick something else for a change. We know it's out there, but we don't need the reminder.

I just got approved for The Burnout, so I'll be excited to hear what you think of it. Hang in there! <3

    1. Thanks, Dedra. Appreciate the good vibes. There have to be other illness, no?

The Burnout was very Kinsella. It was fun and quirky, and I think so many could relate to some sort of burnout.

  13. I'm sorry to hear about your dad, Sam. It is hard when a loved one is sick, especially when the "c word" is mentioned. Pumpkin Spice Frosty?? I wonder if they will have them in Canada?? I can't wait to read that Sophie Kinsella book, she always makes me laugh.

  14. Oh Sam, I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad. My mom is currently battling lymphoma so I feel you on not being in a great mental state. It's so hard to watch a loved one go through it.

I was not aware there was a pumpkin spice frosty but there's a Wendy's 5 minutes from my house so I may be heading there today, lol.
