Can't Wait Wednesday!

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

I am combining CWW with Books From the Backlog hosted by Carole at Carole's Random Life in Books. This will allow me to feature some newly "rediscovered" books, which I plan on reading, alongside a new release.

This week I can't wait for

A Winter in New York
 by Josie Silver
Published by Delacorte Press on October 3, 2023
Age/Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Goodreads

A young chef stumbles on a secret family recipe that might lead her to the love—and life—she’s been looking for in this stunning novel.

When Iris decides to move to New York to restart her life, she realizes she underestimated how big the Big Apple really is—all the nostalgic movies set in New York she’d watched with her mom while eating their special secret-recipe gelato didn’t quite do it justice.

But Bobby, Iris’s best friend, isn’t about to let her hide away. He drags her to a famous autumn street fair in Little Italy, and as they walk through the food stalls, a little family-run gelateria catches her eye—could it be the same shop that’s in an old photo of her mother’s?

Curious, Iris returns the next day and meets the handsome Gio, who tells her that the shop is in danger of closing. His uncle, sole keeper of their family’s gelato recipe, is in a coma, so they can’t make more. When Iris samples the last remaining batch, she realizes that their gelato and her gelato are one and the same. But how can she tell them she knows their secret recipe when she’s not sure why Gio’s uncle gave it to her mother in the first place?

Iris offers her services as a chef to help them re-create the flavor and finds herself falling for Gio and his family. But when Gio’s uncle finally wakes up, all of the secrets Iris has been keeping threaten to ruin the new life—and new love—she’s been building all winter long.

I love Josie Silver's books, so adding this book to my TBR was automatic, but it sounds so fun too.

  1.  The heroine comes to NY to restart her life. I am a fan of characters who take those sort of chances in order to improve their situation. I also have a special place in my heart for NYC since I am Brooklyn born and raised.
  2. Save the shop! Storylines like this tend to be very feel-good and that is my brand.
I have no doubt that this will be a warm and fun tale, and I am excited to read it.

The Measure
 by Nikki Erlick
Published by William Morrow on June 28, 2022
Age/Genres: Adult, Enchanted Realism
Goodreads

Eight ordinary people. One extraordinary choice.

It seems like any other day. You wake up, pour a cup of coffee, and head out.

But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. This box holds your fate inside: the answer to the exact number of years you will live.

From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?

As society comes together and pulls apart, everyone faces the same shocking choice: Do they wish to know how long they’ll live? And, if so, what will they do with that knowledge?

The Measure charts the dawn of this new world through an unforgettable cast of characters whose decisions and fates interweave with one another: best friends whose dreams are forever entwined, pen pals finding refuge in the unknown, a couple who thought they didn’t have to rush, a doctor who cannot save himself, and a politician whose box becomes the powder keg that ultimately changes everything.

I added this book to my TBR last year when I was on my enchanted realism kick. I saw it again, recently, when I saw it on a comp list for a book I really enjoyed. Books like this can mess with my mind because I always wonder how I would deal with their challenge. In this case, how would I react knowing the exact number of years I will live. What plans would I make? Would I drastically change the life I was living? That's deep stuff, and I am so curious to see how the author navigates it all.

What are you waiting on?

    1. I finished it yesterday. I loved it! Gave it five stars. It really did get into a lot of different things, but it was the relationships and connections between the characters that won my heart

    1. I finished The Measure. The whole string concept had my mind going, and the author really explored the different ways a person, family, loved ones, and society would react. Very thought provoking.

    1. That was attacked from all sides, and the different arguments were very interesting. There were also characters who knew and didn't want to know, and the author went into how that affected their lives. Lots to think about with that book
