My Week in Review
In two days, I will be in the happiest place on earth with my most favorite person on earth. If that's not exciting enough, I will also be reunited with Sloth. I will be there for a week, and apologize in advance for being a little MIA.
Today is the our first show of the season, and we are seeing The Color Purple. This book has been coming up a lot this past week, as it was banned books week, and all I can say is, I read this book back in the 80s and have never forgotten how powerful a book it was. Needless to say, I am excited to see this as a musical.

What I Read Last Week
A lot of good reading took place this week. I think my favorite book was Fight or Flight. It was fun and swoony and emotional, and it left me wanting more. It was probably one of the more upbeat books, with the exception of Check, Please!, that I read the week too. All my YA reads were on the heavier side, and were good and thought provoking, but you know me, I can usually only do that stuff in small doses, and I think I ODed this week.
Books
- Hearts Unbroken by Cynthia Leitich - ★★★ 1/2
- Check, Please! by Ngozi Ukazu - ★★★★ review
- The Healer by Donna Freitas - ★★★★
- Fight or Flight by Samantha Young - ★★★★
- Imagine Us Happy by Jennifer Yu - ★★★★
- Don't Call Me Cupcake by Tara Sheets - ★★★★ review
- Not If I Save You First by Ally Carter - ★★★★ review
- Top Shelf by Kelly Jamieson - ★★★★ review
What I Am Currently Reading
Halle is always a good read for me, and I am enjoying Before I Ever Met You. It's sort of a May-December romance, but there is nothing sordid about it. The hero is actually pretty amazing, and Halle made me sympathetic towards him with that shocking prologue.
One Day in December got messy fast! I struggle with wanting Lu to move on and also not give up on her and Jack, but really enjoying it. Sort of reminds me of my love and frustration for Love, Rosie.
- One Day in December by Josie Silver
- Before I Ever Met You by Karina Halle (audiobook)
What I Plan to Read
Not sure how many books I will get through this week, since I will be in Disney from Wednesday until next Tuesday, but these are the last of my October ARCs, and. would love to get them all read and reviewed.
- This is Kind of an Epic Love Story by Kheryn Callender
- In Your Shoes by Donna Gephart
- Watch You Burn by Amanda Searcy
How was your week?
Let us know in the comments!
A week in Disney, I'm assuming? Hope you have a great time and good weather! Fight or Flight looks great- glad to hear it was good- and that hedgehog pic is cute. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday!!
Yes, Disney. Sadly, it looks like 90s for me. Not stoked about the weather, but excited to be there. Fight or Flight was fun and emotional and you know, I always get an HEA with my romances, so that keeps me going.
DeleteTwo more days... the countdown is on! So excited for you, Sam! Wave at me as you fly over Jacksonville. :) Sorry I couldn't arrange for some more fall-like weather but... yeah, 90 degrees *is* fall in Florida as I'm sure you remember. LOL Nice that you had some lighter reads to offset the heavier ones this week. I definitely need a balance, too. You have me intrigued by One Day in December. It's what I plan on picking up after I finish The Gentleman's Guide. Hope you have a fantastic week away with your girl!
ReplyDeleteI went to Disney every year for my birthday, and it was not this oppressive. It was normally mid-80s, which is better, not much, but better than 90s. Canadian cruise next year for me. One Day in December was WONDERFUL!! It really does have that When Harry Met Sally meets Love, Rosie thing going on. The beginnings, endings, and bad timing get a little frustrating, but you understand that it's all part of their journey to each other. I shed too many tears, but I loved it.
DeleteYay for Disney! have an excellent time.
ReplyDeleteWe go in February and i can't wait. Oh you got the be Sally Thorne! I didn't even see it for review. Can't wait to hear what you think! Habe a great week!
I jumped on the Thorne book, when it went up on EW the other day. I feel like it will be a good fit for me, since I enjoyed Thorne's previous book. I got my ponchos and my t-shirts ready for WDW!
DeleteI hope you have lots of fun this week. I've wanted to read The Color Purple for a while - I was expecting it to be a mandatory reading for my MA, but no such luck.
ReplyDeleteWatch You Burn seems quite interesting. I hope you enjoy it.
Happy readings! ;)
Tânia @MyLovelySecret
My co-worker told me she read The Color Purple for her freshman English class in high school. I was surprised. It's a pretty mature book, and graphic too. It's fantastic though. Early reviews for Watch You Burn are not great, but I am going to see how it is, since I really enjoyed the author's debut.
DeleteHave fun on your trip! I've never been to Disney so I hope you can post photos. Safe travels!
ReplyDeleteWe lived in FL for a few years, and used to go once a month. We even went out to Disneyland California and Disneyland Paris once. We are fans. Kiersten is bringing Sloth, so we should get some good shots of him out there.
DeleteTiring week, relaxing weekend! I'm getting my strength back for another week of house tidying to come. Oh joy! Enjoy your holiday!
ReplyDeleteHouse tidying never seems to end. I get a sense of gratification, when everything looks nice, but some things you spend a lot of time cleaning never get to that point, and it's a thankless job.
DeleteOh nice!! I'm still two weeks away from my own Disney trip! I'm super excited for it since I've never been there at Halloween time! I am so looking forward to it! Hope you have an amazing trip!
ReplyDeleteNice new reads too! Totally new to me ones but I hope you will enjoy them both!
Here's my STS
Have a GREAT day!
Old Follower :)
Maybe you will have better weather, because it's going to be less than spectacular when I am there. Hot and rainy, but I saw that NJ was getting near 80 this week too, so --sigh-- east coast woes.
DeleteOh have fun on your trip!!! Disney world or Disney land? I've never been to Disney land (since I live in Ohio) but have been to Disney world 3 times and just love it!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your books!
Disney World. I have been to WDW more than 70 times, because I used to live in FL, DL Cali once, and DL Paris once. We have done 4 cruises and 4 Adventures by Disney. I love the brand.
DeleteSafe travels and enjoy your trip!!! Watch You Burn by Amanda Searcy is also on my October TBR. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I am a little worried about Watch You Burn, because the reviews I have seen, but I liked her debut a lot, so going to give it a try.
DeleteI love Disney! I hope you enjoy it and my Aunt just went last week. I have only been there once but man do I want to go back. So much fun and walking. Lots and lots of walking. I want to read Watch You Burn. I hope you enjoy it! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteMary
Since we have been there so many times, there's not a lot of pressure to get on everything. Which is good, because it's going to be hot.
DeleteDISNEY! I am so jealous of you! I hope you have the best time though! I will be waiting for your updates once you return from vacation! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is my first proper vacation in years. I spent my last few moving the kid to and from colleges. Since Kiersten will be with me, there should be pictures. She can actually take a good photo, unlike me, who took 8 tries to get my last mobile deposit through.
DeleteHave fun at Disney and the play! I’ll be sitting at home, being envious of your adventures. :)
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Paper Mill always puts on a good show, so the play should be great. Disney is never a bad time, so I am sure it will be fun despite the weather, and I will be reunited with Kiersten and Sloth. What more could I ask for?
DeleteOoooh, I want a copy of 99 Percent Mine! Loved The Hating Game! I can't wait to read Fight or Flight, glad to hear you loved it. Have fun on your vacation! :)
ReplyDeleteFight or Flight was a lot of fun, but had those emotional moments, that Young does so well. I really liked it. I was so excited when I was approved for 99 Percent Mine. I will probably be reading it in December, and really can't wait!
DeleteOh Sam have a lot of fun with your favorite person next week and enjoy the show! Thanks for the link to Barnes and Nobles Teen. Did you know that Barnes and Nobles does not ship any longer to Europe???? They ship to Iran, Afghanistan etc but not Europe and I don't know why! I learned it this week as I wanted to pre-order their special edition of The Wicked King! No luck :( Sophie @bewareofthereader
ReplyDeleteThat is bizarre about B&N. Boo!
DeleteHave an amazing time! I have Epic Love Story coming as well. can't wait to read it.
ReplyDeleteKaren @ For What It's Worth
I am loving Epic Love Story
DeleteI hope you have a wonderful time in Disney and that The Color Purple is amazing too. That's probably one of the most powerful books I've ever read so I can only imagine how good the show will be.
ReplyDeleteThe play was really good. I got choked up a few times.

ReplyDeleteSo many books! Enjoy your vacay at Disney! It should be good timing weatherwise now. Anne - Books of My Heart
For some reason, we have a little warmer weather happening here up north, and FL will be in the 90s when I visit. I was hoping for mid 80s, but I guess I can't win them all.
DeleteHave fun at Disney! I still need to read The Color Purple but I did see the movie. I am sure that the play would be great. I hope you fit in a few good reads this week.
ReplyDeleteThe play was excellent. I got really emotional a few times, but mostly when Celie was having moments of empowerment.
DeleteI hope you have a great time in Disney. And I really loved Kind of an Epic Love Story, so I hope you do too!

I just finished Epic Love Story and it was adorable.
DeleteYou are going to have so much fun. Be sure to bring sunscreen!
ReplyDeleteTrying to move past the idea of the miserable weather I am walking into, and trying to talk the kid into a Canadian cruise for next year.
DeleteI hope you have an awesome time at Disney! That little hedgehog is so adorable!
ReplyDeleteHedgehogs never fail to make me happy
DeleteI think I missed it. Who is Sloth??
ReplyDeleteI've only seen the color purple movie as a young girl and I'm always quoting it. I'm sad I missed the chicago stop.
It's my daughter's doll, who inspired our blog design. They did an amazing job adapting the book for the play. It was very emotional. Excellent.
DeleteIntrigued by that Watch You Burn cover. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI am a little worried about that one, because I have seen a bunch of meh reviews, but I am willing to give it a try.
DeleteIntrigued to see what you think of Watch You Burn, Sam! I had some thoughts on that one, and I'm intrigued to see how we compare. And I'm excited This is Kind of Epic. Hope you enjoy this week's reads! :)
ReplyDeleteI keep putting that one off, because reviews have been terrible. Epic Love Story was wonderful. I really enjoyed it, and actually would say, I devoured it. I love the way the author did not put labels on anyone in the story. It was all so natural and fluid and refreshing, and well, the romance was so darn cute too.
DeleteIt sounds like in the coming week you are going to be having the most fun! I am glad you are looking forward to it so much. I need to read The Colour Purple because it sounds like an important book. And it's so cool you've got the next Sally Thorne book to read!!
ReplyDeleteThe Color Purple is an incredible story, and the play was really well done. I got choked up when Celie became empowered and rose up against those that were holding her down. Great book!
