Can't Wait Wednesday: Emergency Contact - Mary H.K. Choi

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I can't wait for Emergency Contact!

Emergency Contact
Mary H.K. Choi
Series: n/a
Release Date: March 27, 2918
Publisher: Simon Schuster Books for Young Readers
Waited on by: Sam
For Penny Lee high school was a total nonevent. Her friends were okay, her grades were fine, and while she somehow managed to land a boyfriend, he doesn’t actually know anything about her. When Penny heads to college in Austin, Texas, to learn how to become a writer, it’s seventy-nine miles and a zillion light years away from everything she can’t wait to leave behind.

Sam’s stuck. Literally, figuratively, emotionally, financially. He works at a café and sleeps there too, on a mattress on the floor of an empty storage room upstairs. He knows that this is the god-awful chapter of his life that will serve as inspiration for when he’s a famous movie director but right this second the seventeen bucks in his checking account and his dying laptop are really testing him.

When Sam and Penny cross paths it’s less meet-cute and more a collision of unbearable awkwardness. Still, they swap numbers and stay in touch—via text—and soon become digitally inseparable, sharing their deepest anxieties and secret dreams without the humiliating weirdness of having to see each other.
So many things have me wanting to read this book. I loved the cover, and the way the main characters are embarking on new chapters of their lives, good and bad. Just when they thought they were on their own, the universe brings them together to become each other's "person". I read this article where Mary H.K. Choi discussed her inspiration. It also had an excerpt, and it totally left me wanting more.

  2. I like the point of the digital closeness this book mentions -- I know there are a whole heap of reasons out there that such closeness isn't real in our tech world, but I genuinely believe it provides a closeness that can make a difference to people - and I love that this book seems to acknowledge that.

  6. Ah yes, our digital world. What was that I heard yesterday in the news, that some famous smartphone company is worried about the addiction the younger generation has developed using their devices??? That book seems to tell a story that is familiar to it. Or am I understanding the summary wrong? Anyway, guess that goes on my wishlist. Thanks for sharing.
    My pick

    Best wishes

    1. I didn't have a cell phone until I was 26 years old, so I am not as attached to it as my daughter, but I think it's like all things. The good and the bad.

  10. It does look good. Looks like it's going for that magical period when one is finding oneself and relationships are so new and fresh. Plus the relationship-by-text angle! Nice pick.

    1. There is a whole generation that really only communicates via text, and this book acknowledges that it is a valid form of closeness.
