(Don't) Believe the Hype!
Happy Tuesday! Today we are talking hyped books. Those books that seem to be everywhere. I usually don't let the hype get to me, but sometimes FOMO gets the best of me, and I have to read it! My experience has been a mixed bag. Some books I loved, others, I didn't quite understand the hype. This is not my first foray into this topic (here), but I was thinking about twisting it a bit. Below are ten hyped books - five I loved and five that were ok, but did not impress me enough to read more from the author.
- The Maid by Nita Prose
- Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid
- Get a Life Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert
- The Cheat Sheet by Sarah Adams
- How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang
- Normal People by Sally Rooney
- Kulti by Mariana Zapata
- Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
- The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune
- Twisted Love by Ana Huang
How do you feel about hyped books?

TJR has long been a favorite of mine, so I'm glad to see she made the first list! I have been avoiding reading TJ Klune, though.
ReplyDeleteI will just say that Klune is not for me, but he is super popular. I am not interested in all TJR's books, but the ones I have read were excellent.
DeleteTwo of your meh are my yeah Sam! RW&RB and The House in the Cerulean Sea!
ReplyDeleteI know people love those books, and I am glad they have an audience.
DeleteI haven't read any of these but good to know I'm not missing much.
ReplyDeleteHA! You slay me.
DeleteLoved The Maid! I read one by Taylor Jenkins Reed that I hated and haven't had the motivation to try her again. On the other hand I loved Kulti. Every one has different reading tastes! :)
ReplyDeleteI gave Kulti 2/5. Zapata's style isn't for me. I stuck with it because everyone loved that book, but not for me.
DeleteI have read Hibbert, but I still need to read the Brown Sisters series.
ReplyDeleteSuch a stellar series! I think you will love it
DeleteI've only read one of these—THE MAID—and I totally agree with you, it's a gem! I enjoyed the second book too and am really looking forward to the Christmas novella that came out yesterday. Such a fun series!
ReplyDeleteHappy TTT (on a Wednesday)!
I am excited about the holiday book, too! Molly's life was definitely taking a turn, and I would love it if we get some details in the novella.
DeleteI'm always so wary of hyped books. All of a sudden it feels like *everyone* is raving about a book and pronouncing it the next big thing. Like most seasoned readers, I know what I like and am usually good with following my gut and knowing what clicks with me and what probably isn't for me. But sometimes you get surprised - both good and bad. LOL
ReplyDeleteI really loved Carrie Soto is Back. Just fantastic. Red, White and Royal Blue... I don't think I loved it quite as much as many others, but I still thought it was very good. Kulti is tied for my favorite Zapata book. So much love for that one. :)
I struggled with Kulti. I just accept that Zapata's writing is not for me.
DeleteAh I love this so much. I'm so glad that Carrie Soto ended up being a hit for you, I love this author's books so much! :)
ReplyDeleteCarrie Soto is a standout character, and TJR did an amazing job helping me understand her.
DeleteSorry that The Cerulean Sea wasn't for you, Sam. I listened to it and think that made it much more enjoyable for me.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if narration would change my mind about that one. There were things that are pet peeves of mine, but hey, I gave it go.
