The City Baker's Guide to Country Living by AUTHOR

A full-hearted novel about a big-city baker who discovers the true meaning of home—and that sometimes the best things are found when you didn’t even know you were looking
When Olivia Rawlings—pastry chef extraordinaire for an exclusive Boston dinner club—sets not just her flambéed dessert but the entire building alight, she escapes to the most comforting place she can think of—the idyllic town of Guthrie, Vermont, home of Bag Balm, the country’s longest-running contra dance, and her best friend Hannah. But the getaway turns into something more lasting when Margaret Hurley, the cantankerous, sweater-set-wearing owner of the Sugar Maple Inn, offers Livvy a job. Broke and knowing that her days at the club are numbered, Livvy accepts.
Livvy moves with her larger-than-life, uberenthusiastic dog, Salty, into a sugarhouse on the inn’s property and begins creating her mouthwatering desserts for the residents of Guthrie. She soon uncovers the real reason she has been hired—to help Margaret reclaim the inn’s blue ribbon status at the annual county fair apple pie contest.
With the joys of a fragrant kitchen, the sound of banjos and fiddles being tuned in a barn, and the crisp scent of the orchard just outside the front door, Livvy soon finds herself immersed in small town life. And when she meets Martin McCracken, the Guthrie native who has returned from Seattle to tend his ailing father, Livvy comes to understand that she may not be as alone in this world as she once thought.
But then another new arrival takes the community by surprise, and Livvy must decide whether to do what she does best and flee—or stay and finally discover what it means to belong. Olivia Rawlings may finally find out that the life you want may not be the one you expected—it could be even better.
I really got a feel for the setting with this book as the main character made many observations of her new home. This was a great story of rising from the ashes. Livvy had to rebuild her life, and I loved that she learned some much about herself and what she was really looking. She found family, love, and her future in an unlikely place, and it was a lovely journey to be part of.

Opposites attract when a straitlaced lawyer and whimsical party planner must fake-date as co-parents of a rambunctious Irish wolfhound in the second book of this im-paw-ssibly charming small-town romance series.
Connor Wyeth has a plan for everything. But when he adopts Maximus, an unruly Irish wolfhound mix, he gets more than he bargained for. If he doesn't act fast, the big dopey mutt is going to destroy his house. The only person Max ever listens to is the volunteer who used to walk him at the shelter—a perennially upbeat woman whose day job is planning princess parties for little kids. Connor couldn't ever imagine that she'd be able to tame such a beast as Max, but he's desperate enough to try anything.
Deenie Mitchell isn't looking forward to spending more time with uptight, rules-oriented Connor—no matter how attractive he is. But when her sister announces her engagement, Deenie realizes he's the perfect person to impress her type-A family. When she learns he needs a plus-one for his law firm's work events, an unlikely alliance is formed. But as they play the perfect couple, the friendship—and the feelings—that are forming start to feel all too real. Opposites may attract, but can the man with a plan for everything and the misfit who makes her own rules ever find common ground?
This whole series has been great! I know I will get to spend time with some precious pups and be treating to a heartwarming tale. I love this little Vermont town which is filled with fun and quirky characters who remind me of all the things I adore about small town life.

She’s the only one who ever loved him—and the only one he can never have.
Jude lost everything one spring day when he crashed his car into an apple tree on the side of the road. A man is dead, and there's no way he can ever right that wrong. He’d steer clear of Colebury, Vermont forever if he could. But an ex-con in recovery for his drug addiction can’t find a job just anywhere.
For Sophie Haines, coming face to face with the man who broke her heart is gut-wrenching. Suddenly, he’s everywhere she turns. It’s hard not to stare at how much he’s changed. The bad boy who used to love her didn’t have big biceps and sun-kissed hair. And he’d never turn up volunteer in the church kitchen.
She knows it’s foolish to yearn for the man who returned all the heartsick letters she wrote him in prison. But the looks he sends her now speak volumes.
No one wants to see Sophie and Jude back together, least of all Sophie's police chief father. But it's a small town. And forbidden love is a law unto itself.
I will forever associate Sarina Bowen with Vermont, and this series gives such an incredible look at this fine state. I feel that Bittersweet really pulled me into live in Vermont, but I chose to showcase this book because it was such an emotional story of second chances. This was a complicated love story and an excruciating journey, but it was well worth the stress and tears.

I think you've visited all the states! 😂 Or nearly all of them? Every book seems to remind you of something.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I have hardly visited any US states. I do read a book set in every one each year though.
DeleteI really need to read Steadfast. I read the first book in that series forever ago and never moved on. Truly Devious is the only other Vermont book I can think of at the moment.
ReplyDeleteThe True North series is great. I think you would enjoy it. I thought Johnson gave us a nice look at VT in Truly Devious. There was a lot going on outdoors and with the weather in those books.
DeleteI really enjoyed the first book, so I have no doubt I'll continue to enjoy the series. I just need to squeeze it in somewhere.
DeleteSuch a tiny state! I haven't been there, but I really want to visit. I just read a book I love a few weeks back set in Vermont, which is where the author lives as well. I follow her on Instagram and her photos of farm life look so pretty. It was Agony Hill by Sarah Stewart Taylor.
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful state. My daughter has been posting pictures during her visit and they are all lovely.
DeleteIt's such a tiny state indeed! I wonder if it's smaller than my country (that would be extremely small for the US!)
ReplyDeleteI checked. Vermont is a bit smaller than your country.
DeleteI just finished a book that was partially set in Vermont, The Plot. I will keep the Lizzie Shane book in mind for next year.
ReplyDeleteI remember when The Plot came out. I didn't realize it was a series.
DeleteFunny that the second book is called The Sequel. I don't know if it will be a series, or just two books. I guess time will tell.
DeleteIt had a series title in Goodreads, and I love the name for the sequel.
DeleteMy parents have a house in Vermont, but we definitely don't go as much as we could, unfortunately!
ReplyDeleteYou should try and get there. I bet it is stunning up there right now with fall coming.
DeleteWhen I think Vermont I immediately think of the True North series. I've never been to VT but if I could hang out with the Shipley clan I head that way. :) Steadfast was my favorite in the series.
ReplyDeleteThat series IS VT to me. Bowen really sold me on the state with that book. Steadfast was MY favorite, too. *High Five* (though book 1 was very, very good)
