Sloth Goes Places - Florida

Sloth Goes Places is a feature where I share books I have tracked from previous Literary Escapes reading challenge hosted by Escape With Dollycas Into a Good Book.

Today we are looking at books set in ....

Florida

Florida is a state I am well acquainted with as I lived there for about 6.5 years. I lived up north, but had traveled the entire state all the way south to Miami and west to Tallahassee. I find Florida well represented in the books I read. It's not a state I ever have to seek out. This year, it was Fangirl Down that found me and fulfilled my Florida goal, but I have read several others as well.

Fangirl Down

#1 New York Times bestselling author Tessa Bailey launches a super sexy sports romance series with a rom-com about a bad boy professional athlete who falls for his biggest fan...

Wells Whitaker was once golf’s hottest rising star, but lately, all he has to show for his “promising” career is a killer hangover, a collection of broken clubs, and one remaining supporter. No matter how bad he plays, the beautiful, sunny redhead is always on the sidelines. He curses, she cheers. He scowls, she smiles. But when Wells quits in a blaze of glory and his fangirl finally goes home, he knows he made the greatest mistake of his life.

Josephine Doyle believed in the gorgeous, grumpy golfer, even when he didn’t believe in himself. Yet after he throws in the towel, she begins to wonder if her faith was misplaced. Then a determined Wells shows up at her door with a wild proposal: be his new caddy, help him turn his game around, and split the prize money. And considering Josephine’s professional and personal life is in shambles, she could really use the cash…

As they travel together, spending days on the green and nights in neighboring hotel rooms, sparks fly. Before long, they’re inseparable, Wells starts winning again, and Josephine is surprised to find a sweet, thoughtful guy underneath his gruff, growly exterior. This hot man wants to brush her hair, feed her snacks, and take bubble baths together? Is this real life? But Wells is technically her boss and an athlete falling for his fangirl would be ridiculous… right?

This tale includes a major weather event which is unfortunately common in Florida - a hurricane. The main characters do travel for golf tournaments, but there was enough of a spotlight on Florida for one to get a peek at the state. Fangirl Down was such an amazing read. A great story, fantastic characters, and a sizzling romance were all things that had me flipping those pages, but it was also packed with humor and warmth.

Just Some Stupid Love Story
 by Katelyn Doyle

five-stars

For fans of Emily Henry, a debut about a rom-com screenwriter who doesn't believe in love and a divorce attorney who does, forced together at their high school reunion fifteen years after their breakup

Molly Marks writes Hollywood rom-coms for a living—which is how she knows “romance” is a racket. The one and only time she was naive enough to fall in love was with her high school boyfriend, Seth—who she ghosted on the eve of graduation and hasn’t seen in fifteen years.

Seth Rubinstein believes in love, the grand, fated kind, despite his job as, well…one of Chicago’s most successful divorce attorneys. Over the last decade, he’s sought “the one” in countless bad dates and rushed relationships. He knows his soulmate is out there. But so far, no one can compare to Molly Marks, the first girl who broke his heart.

When Molly’s friends drag her to Florida for their fifteenth high school reunion, it is poetic justice that she’s forced to sit with Seth. Too many martinis and a drunken hookup later, they decide to make a bet: whoever can predict the fate of five couples before the next reunion must declare that the other is right about true love. The catch? The fifth couple is the two of them.

Molly assures Seth they are a tale of timeless heartbreak. Seth promises she’ll end up hopelessly in love with him. She thinks he’s delusional. He has five years to prove her wrong.

Wickedly funny, sexy, and brimming with laughs and heart like the best romantic comedies, Just Some Stupid Love Story is for everyone who believes in soulmates—even if they would never admit it.

Florida was home for the main characters who reunited at their high school reunion. Though the entire book does not take place in Florida, the setting was incorporated enough to make an impression. The weather in this state definitely gets a lot of mentions, and if you have been to Florida, you understand why. I adored this book! The characters were vibrate, the dialog was snappy, the friendships were strong, and the premise was interesting. I simply had a wonderful time spending the years with this couple as I waited for them to finally find their forever together.

Haunted Ever After

It's love at first haunting in a seaside town that raises everyone’s spirits from USA Today bestselling author Jen DeLuca.

Small Florida coastal towns often find themselves scrambling for the tourism dollars that the Orlando theme parks leave behind. And within the town limits of Boneyard Key, the residents decided long ago to lean into its ghostliness. Nick Royer, owner of the Hallowed Grounds coffee shop, embraces the ghost tourism that keeps the local economy afloat, as well as his spectral roommate. At least he doesn’t have to run air-conditioning.

Cassie Rutherford possibly overreacted to all her friends getting married and having kids by leaving Orlando and buying a flipped historic cottage in Boneyard Key. Though there’s something unusual with her new home (her laptop won’t charge in any outlets, and the poetry magnets on her fridge definitely didn’t read “WRONG” and “MY HOUSE” when she put them up), she’s charmed by the colorful history surrounding her. And she's catching a certain vibe from the grumpy coffee shop owner whenever he slips her a free slice of banana bread along with her coffee order.

As Nick takes her on a ghost tour, sharing town gossip that tourists don't get to hear, and they spend nights side-by-side looking into the former owners of her haunted cottage, their connection solidifies into something very real and enticing. But Cassie's worried she’s in too deep with this whole (haunted) home ownership thing… and Nick's afraid to get too close in case Cassie gets scared away for good.

This was a great start for DeLuca's new series which is set in the most haunted town in Florida. I think Boneyard Key is what many would picture as a quintessential town, maybe just not as haunted. The setting was one of the stars of this book, as well as all the wonderful characters. I am really looking forward to returning to this town.

  2. You lived there for so long! May I ask why you decided to relocate?

It makes sense that there would be so many Florida books. Sea, sun, theme parks, natural parks...

    1. I moved around with my family. We bounced from Brooklyn to NJ to Florida. When my mother got another relocation back to NJ, I followed. I didn't want to be alone down there, but it is one of my great regrets. I had a nice job, home, life down there.

  4. I haven't crossed FL off my list yet this year, but two of the books you featured are on my TBR, so it shouldn't be hard!

  6. Florida seems to be a fairly common setting but even so I don't think I've read one set in FL yet this year. Wait... I take that back. It was this year that I read Pucking Wild and that's set here in Jax. So not only FL, but the same city. That's pretty fun. :)

    1. I love that you read a book set in Jax. The closest I got is nearby areas to where I live.
