Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
I am combining CWW with Books From the Backlog hosted by Carole at Carole's Random Life in Books. This will allow me to feature some newly "rediscovered" books, which I plan on reading, alongside a new release.

Lara's had eyes for exactly one person throughout her three years of high school: Chase Harding. He's tall, strong, sweet, a football star, and frankly, stupid hot. Oh, and he's talking to her now. On purpose and everything. Maybe...flirting, even? No, wait, he's definitely flirting, which is pretty much the sum of everything Lara's wanted out of life. Why I want to read this book
Except she’s haunted by a memory. A memory of a confusing, romantic, strangely perfect summer spent with a girl named Jasmine. A memory that becomes a confusing, disorienting present when Jasmine herself walks through the front doors of the school to see Lara and Chase chatting it up in front of the lockers.
Lara has everything she ever wanted: a tight-knit group of friends, a job that borders on cool, and Chase, the boy of her literal dreams. But if she's finally got the guy, why can't she stop thinking about the girl?
Cool for the Summer is a story of self-discovery and new love. It’s about the things we want and the things we need. And it’s about the people who will let us be who we are.
I have followed Adler's reviews forever, but have yet to read one of her books. I feel like she has an important voice in YA and am excited to read some of her work. Why start here? Honestly, the cover called to me, and the story sounds like it will be fun, but still have depth. I always like a good journey of self-discovery, and I am excited to take this trip with Lara.

Derrick is sure that doomsday is coming, and he's prepping to survive--whether his friends believe him or not--in this middle grade novel for readers of Gary Schmidt, Gordon Korman, and Jack GantosWhy I want to read this book
Ever since his mother was killed in the line of duty in Iraq, Derrick has been absolutely certain that the apocalypse is coming. And he's prepared: he's got plenty of canned goods, he's fully outfitted with HAZMAT suits, and he's building himself a sturdy fallout shelter. When his neighbor Misty insists on helping with the shelter, Derrick doesn't think it's such a good idea. Misty's just had a kidney transplant, and her reaction to her brush with death is the opposite of Derrick's: where Derrick wants to hide, Misty wants to see and do everything. But as confident as Misty is, Derrick's doomsday fears just keep getting worse. And Derrick's promised apocalypse day begins with a very strange disaster, Derrick and Misty have to figure out a way to survive--especially when the end of the world as they know it looks nothing like they expected.
This is actually an ARC, which seems to have slipped through the cracks. I was going through my files, and I saw this. When I read the summary, I couldn't understand how I had not read it. Everyone knows I love a good grief book, and I am actually looking forward to these two contrasting reactions to "a brush with death". I have been reading more and more doomsdayer stuff too, and I find it fascinating.
Ah!! Discovering an unread ARC on the tbr!! That has happened to me more often than I want to admit! Both of these sound amazing and I also have yet to read any of Adler's books. There are so many rave reviews for her work. I hope that you love both of these. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I have quite a few unread ARCs (can't seem to move beyond 90-91% on NG).
DeleteCool For The Summer sounds like it's going to be pretty fun! I'd love to know how it all works out for Lara.
ReplyDeleteSummer books are usually really fun, and I feel like it will live up to my expectations.
DeleteThe titles of both of these books have songs running through my head now. lol.

I had to google. I am not familiar with anything by Lavato (after her Camp Rock days).
DeleteI hope you get to that ARC soon! I hate when they slip through the cracks.
ReplyDeleteI should be starting it tomorrow. I always read the backlog book I feature.
DeleteI love the blurb on It's the End of the World As I Know It. I just had to add it to my TBR. Hope you love both of these!!
ReplyDeleteAside from the fact that I can't stop singing, I am excited to start the book tomorrow.
DeleteWell better late than never right? LOL I am joking here but that would so happen to me Sam! I hope you'll enjoy both!
ReplyDeleteThat's like my motto.
DeleteEnd of the world stuff often gets my attention too. these both look good. I like the sound of that first one too!
ReplyDeleteUsually I just read that stuff with fascination, but sometimes it gets me nervous.
DeleteThe cover of Cool For Summer called to me as well and the last paragraph of the blurb sold me on it. Definitely my kind of read. Hopefully we'll both enjoy it. :)
ReplyDeleteI am excited to finally read one of Adler's books. I am such a fan of her reviews and think that will translate well to a whole story
DeleteOh, I hate having those unread ARCs, but I have a few old ones there that glare at me. Sounds like an intriguing premise. Hope you love them both!
ReplyDeleteWell, I have LOTS of them, but this one actually sounds like one I will really enjoy.
DeleteIt is hard to believe that Summer is almost here, but I am looking forward to some summer reading. My last few books have been a bit heavier, so I'm really excited to just get lost in a silly thriller.
ReplyDeleteIs that a thing? A silly thriller, because that would be right up my alley
DeleteCool for the Summer sounds amazing! I think that I would really like It's the End of the World as I Know It too.
ReplyDeleteI should be starting End of the World tomorrow (I hope?). I don't know where I got the page count for my current book, but when I rechecked, it was about 100 pages longer than I though.
DeleteThe cover for Cool For the Summer is so much fun! You're right, a journey of self discovery is like this is well worth a read.
ReplyDeleteEvery time, right?
DeleteIt's the End of the World As I Know It sounds right up your alley. I hope it's a good one for you!
ReplyDeleteRight? I cannot understand how I missed this one.
DeleteI haven't read anything by Adler either, but I love the cover!
ReplyDeleteIt's a good summer themed cover.
DeleteI heard the yellow one was good. Just a rumor.
ReplyDeleteIt WAS a good one. So glad I finally read it!
DeleteCool for the Summer sounds so good, I can't wait to read it either :D
ReplyDeleteI hope it's a hit for both of us
