They have a love-hate relationship with summer. The past five summers have been filled with swimming, the lake, and pranks. This summer, Sidney and Asher agreed to a truce, but once they were not preoccupied with their normal antics, these two began to finally recognize the romantic feelings they had been harboring for one another.
Sidney and Asher should have clicked. Two star swimmers forced to spend their summers on a lake together sounds like the perfect match. But it’s the same every year—in between cookouts and boat rides and family-imposed bonfires, Sidney and Asher spend the dog days of summer finding the ultimate ways to prank each other. And now, after their senior year, they’re determined to make it the most epic summer yet.
But their plans are thrown in sudden jeopardy when their feud causes their families to be kicked out of their beloved lake houses. Once in their new accommodations, Sidney expects the prank war to continue as usual. But then she gets a note—Meet me at midnight. And Asher has a proposition for her: join forces for one last summer of epic pranks, against a shared enemy—the woman who kicked them out.
Their truce should make things simpler, but six years of tormenting one another isn’t so easy to ignore. Kind of like the undeniable attraction growing between them.
- Pro: This was a enemies-to-lovers type romance, and I think many will appreciate the way a their well established prank war gave way to a pretty mushy courtship, that was filed with great banter and lots of chemistry.
- Pro: You know what I like? I like when couples have history, and Sidney and Asher had plenty of it. I liked learning about their past, but I was ecstatic when they slowly revealed their well concealed feelings for each other.
- Pro: These two were high level competitive swimmers, and I liked this aspect of their lives. It tied them together, and there were a lot of really great swim related scenes, which I enjoyed.
- Con: I did like Sidney, but the emotional runner in her drove me batty. She did it so much, I was able to spot it even before it happened.
- Pro: Asher was easy to love from the start. He was sweet and charming, and he would store away little bits of information about Sidney, which he would use at just the right time to create some magnificent moments. I almost wanted to give Sidney a good shake to find out what her problem was with him. Oh, don't worry, you will learn the root of the great lake prank war.
- Pro: Does Jessica Pennington know me or what? She gifted me a wonderful epilogue, which left me happy and smiling.

I hate you, Fuller James.Wren has hated Fuller James since he came between her and her best friend, AND bestowed that awful nickname on her - Wrentainer. She managed to hate him from afar for the past five years, but as a punishment for launching a handful of mashed potatoes at her nemesis, she was forced to tutor him. After spending time with the real Fuller James, she realized, that maybe, she didn't hate him at all.
I hate your floppy hair and your lopsided grin and those laughing blue eyes that always seem to be laughing at me.
I hate that you’re the most popular guy in school and I’m still the girl who sneezed and spit out her retainer on someone at a middle school dance. It’s just such a cliché.
I hate that I’m being forced to tutor you in English and keep it a secret from everyone. Because otherwise it might put our basketball team’s chances at winning State in jeopardy, and even though I hate you, I love basketball.
I hate that it seems like you’re keeping a secret from me…and that the more time we spend together, the less I feel like I’m on solid ground. Because I’m starting to realize there’s so much more to you than meets the eye. Underneath it all, you’re real.
But what I hate most is that I really don’t hate you at all.
- Pro: This book was exactly what I needed after being sick for a week. It was fun and cute, and I really couldn't stop reading it, because I was enjoying it so much.
- Pro: I ended up liking both Fuller and Wren a whole lot. I loved getting to know them, and seeing beyond the surface, because they were pretty wonderful underneath all their armor. I also adored them together, and was absolutely shipping them the entire time.
- Pro: There were a few really wonderful familial relationships in this book, which I could not get enough of. Fuller and his little brother were precious together, and Wren and her grandfather stole my heart too. I loved all the positive family focus, and there was a lot of it in this book.
- Con: Marissa, the ex-best friend, was a miserable mean girl. This trope tends to annoy me, but at least I felt like she served a purpose in the story, and she was dealt with appropriately.
- Pro: Both characters experienced personal growth, but Fuller grew a LOT. Being with Wren, and being recognized for more than his basketball prowess, had Fuller looking at things from a new perspective. He realized he was changing, and embraced these changes and his new outlook on things, and gosh darn it! Fuller 2.0 was pretty fabulous.
- Pro: Blount presented me with a rather wonderful grand gesture, a combination of some fan favorites, which delighted me to no end.

I've heard good things about the Jessica Pennington book. I desperately need to pick up my company. I'm a sucker for a good enemies-to-lovers!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is still her first book, though I have enjoyed them all
DeleteSo many pros for both!! I've seen both books around and have definitely been intrigued. I love the cute covers! I don't think I've read anything by either of these authors.
ReplyDeleteBoth were great ways to pass some time. They were fun and cute with just a bit of weight.
DeleteI have a hate-to-love relationship with hate-to-love stories! Like, I actually don't think it's healthy to fall for someone who's treated you like crap, but from Pride & Prejudice to The Wicked King, authors have made it work.
ReplyDeleteThese were not that extreme. The animosity in both books was born from something that happened, which was really a misunderstanding . It was easy for me to forgive the past transgressions. I won't say it's my favorite trope, and I got more into both books, when they started making nice with each other.
DeleteHurray for a couple great reads! I love enemies-to-lovers. I didn't know Tor published contemporary romance!
ReplyDeleteThat's all I read from Tor. All three of Pennington's book were published by them.
DeleteGreat little reviews for both of these, they sound like great weekend escape reads!
ReplyDeleteThey really were great escapes. I had a good time, and both left me happy at the end
DeleteI haven't, but would love to read Meet Me at Midnight because it sounds cute and I enjoyed Jessica Pennington's debut Love Songs and Other Lies! I also have her other book When Summer Ends on my tbr as well.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed all three of Pennington's books, though, her debut is my favorite. She knows how to write a sweet romance, and I am always up for that.
Deletesound fun and i'm glad you enjoyed them. thanks for sharing
ReplyDeletesherry @ fundinmental
They were fun, and they both had great little romances in them too
DeleteI'm going to read I Hate You, Fuller James here pretty soon! I'm so glad you liked it!
ReplyDeleteI liked it more than I actually anticipated. Both Fuller and Wren were great characters, and they were adorable together. I hope you enjoy it.
DeleteI think I might have to pick up I Hate You, Fuller James just because that cover is so cute! Great reviews!
ReplyDeleteAnd they eat that lollypop in the book too.
DeleteBoth of these sound great and scream summer. LOL
ReplyDeleteOne is set in summer on the lake, but both have that light and breezy feel I associate with summer reads.
DeleteI love a nice epilogue- they can really wrap up a story and make you think as well, after a satisfying ending. Nothing like a good epilogue that leaves me smiling. :) The swimming angle sounds fun too in Meet Me.
ReplyDeleteI never say no to an epilogue, and I think it's because I need so much closure. Both characters in Midnight are competitive swimmers, who even go on to swim in college. There are some training scenes too
DeleteThese both sound like such fun reads. I especially like the sound of I Hate You, Full James. Hate to love relationships and great family relationships are definitely my jam.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea I would love Fuller James as much as I did. It gave me warm fuzzies, and that always makes me happy
DeleteOh, I do love a good hate-to-love romance! Glad these two were a hit for you, Sam! Doesn't the first cover remind you of the one for Wild at Heart by K.A. Tucker? It gives me the same feeling somehow. I like it. :)
ReplyDeleteIt must be all the blue that gives you that Wild at Heart feel. (might I add, that has a great cover)
DeleteOh the cover for Fuller James got me rightaway! I love it -- so bright and lovely, and that blurb just made me smile!
ReplyDeleteI thought the cover was random, but at one point in the story, they share the exact lollypop pictured on the cover
DeleteMeet Me at Midnight sounds very fun - I love that even though they have this enemies thing going on, they can come together for a common goal!
ReplyDeleteYes, the truce was in the name of torturing a common enemy, and those were some good pranks.
DeleteI do enjoy prank wars!
ReplyDeleteSome of the ones described in the book were quite hilarious. So much tamer, than the adult hate-to-love book I finished the other day
DeleteThe first one makes me smile because I love books which involve pranks, and films with pranks too and we don't see enough of it in books! As for the I Hate You Fuller James, I completely get the dislike. I wouldn't take too kindly to someone who came between me and my friends. But I am glad that once they get to know each other better the story changes!
ReplyDeleteMidnight had some funny pranks in it. Silly stuff, not mean, like I have seen in other books. Fuller James surprised me. I enjoyed it more than I anticipated, and the family focus was a lovely bonus
DeleteI loved, I Hate You Fuller James, for all the reasons you did Sam! My favorite being the familial relationships, character growth, and sweet grand gesture! What a spectacular ending!
ReplyDeleteLindy@ A Bookish Escape
I thought Blount did such a great job with the family aspect. I was all about the sappy parts of that book. And, yes, that ending made me so happy
DeleteThese both sound like they're exactly the sort of book you need sometimes. I'm definitely going to check out Fuller James because it sounds like something I'd really love.

Fuller James was adorable! My Hoopla had it, maybe yours will too.
