This week, we are left up to our own devices, and I wanted to do something that involved winter. While perusing my books, I saw, that I had quite a few, which featured ice skating in some capacity, and therefore, thought it would make a great topic for this week. All books are YA EXCEPT the last two, but I loved them both so much, and had to include them. I will admit, many of these books center around hockey, but there are a few, OK two, which focus on figure skating, and actually, made me want to find more YA books with figure skating characters.
- Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler
- Michigan vs. the Boys by Carrie S. Allen
- On Thin Ice by Julie Cross
- Even If I Fall by Abigail Johnson
- Cold Day in the Sun by Sara Biren
- Just One of the Boys by Leah & Kate Rooper
- Top Ten by Katie Cotugno
- The Field Guide to the North American Teenager by Ben Philippe
- Check, Please! by Ngozi Ukazu
- The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen
Do you ice skate?

Look at you, skating like a pro! I would never dare LOL.
ReplyDeleteWho would have thought there were so many books about hockey/skating?
I used to like to skate, when we visited my aunt upstate or at the pond in our town, if it ever froze enough.
DeleteWhen I saw the title "free skate" I had to laugh because I was hit with memories of my years spent roller skating. (Not a lot of ice skating happening in FL. LOL) Circa 1980 Tanya practically lived in her white roller skates with the neon orange wheels. :) Love that pic of you! You look like you're having fun. :)
ReplyDeleteOn Thin Ice was wonderful - you know I love that series by Julie Cross. And The Year We Fell Down was so good. And a reminder that I need to continue with the series.
Oh, make no mistake, that title was inspired by my youthful turns at United Skates of America. Our house in Brooklyn was a railroad house, and our basement had a cement floor. I used to skate down there, when the weather didn't permit me to skate outside. My skates had pompoms, thank you very much.
DeleteSkating in the basement?? Skates with pompoms?? Girl, you were living the life! LOL
DeleteWhen I was in grade school, I would insist on walking down the slat stairs to the basement with my skates on. Needless to say, I sported a fat lip, here and there, due to falls
DeleteCool ice skating picture. I know I probably have a picture of me skating on a pond somewhere. I love hockey, so some of these books are actually on my TBR! I’m especially excited for The Field Guide for the North American Teenager.
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I loved to skate when I was younger. I didn't get to do a ton of outdoor skating, but there was a rink nearby. Field Guide was a fave this year. I hope you get a chance to read it.
Deleteawesome pic. made me think of us kids skating on the creek at the end of the road we lived on. now...i can't even stand up on them. lol
ReplyDeletesherry @ fundinmental
I haven't tried to skate since my daughter was small. Not sure how I would do these days either
DeleteOh wow! How cool is that! I didn't realize there were so many books with ice skating! But then again since I'm not in the contemporary market I don't really know what goes on there. Lol. Very nice topic and picks!
ReplyDeleteHere's my Tuesday Post
Have a GREAT day!
Old Follower :)
I read a lot of hockey books, so it's built in there. I want to find more books with figure skating - a new goal
DeleteI do like a good hockey romance but I don't think I have read any with figure skating. Of course, maybe I have since my memory seems to be failing me lately. I am going to have to read that Bowen book!
ReplyDeleteThe heroine in that Bowen book remains one of my favorites that she has written. She is injured playing hockey and ended up in a wheelchair. It was fantastic watching her try to reclaim some of the parts of her life she had thought were gone forever.
DeleteI went ice skating a few times as a kid, but not enough to be able to do much more than creep along the edge of the rink while holding on to the side for dear life! LOL. Definitely not Olympic material. Books about skating are fun, though. I actually just finished EVEN IF I FALL. I didn't love it, but it was okay.
ReplyDeleteHappy TTT!
I remember going, when my daughter was small, and they give those kids what looks like a walker. It was hilarious. I love Johnson's books. All have been hits for me.
DeleteWhat a fun topic you chose! I'm hoping to take my daughter ice skating in the next week or two, which is a real treat since we live in Louisiana!
ReplyDeleteWe didn't get to do too much outdoor skating. The red ball never seemed to be hung at the pond in our town's park, but there was a rink in a nearby town, that we used to visit for fun. Hope you have a great time skating
DeleteLove that photo of you skating! This is a great topic and a timely one too. I recently read and enjoyed Beartown by Fredrik Backman, which features ice hockey, so I'm grateful for your list of skating books since I'd love to read more.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know Beartown had hockey in it, though, Backman is from a place that has a lot of winter. I have only read one of his books, but it was lovely.
DeleteHa! That looks like an 80s photo if I ever saw one! I did my fair share of skating in the 80's too, but it was roller, not ice. The ice doesn't look solid, though, Were you scared to fall in? If you want a figure skating book From Lukov With Love was fun. Reminded me of big time of The Cutting Edge.
ReplyDeleteI was in high school in the late 80s, so, totally 80s picture. I loved to roller skate too. I remember having the little pink plastic skates that went over my shoes and then I graduated to the boot with pompoms and sparkle wheels. Gah! The Cutting Edge - "toe pick". I have not had great success with Zapata, so I have yet to try Lukov.
DeleteGreat wintery theme! I really need to get to Michigan vs The Boys, and Top Ten was one I really liked!
ReplyDeleteMichigan was great! And, I don't care how low the ratings were, I loved Top Ten. It was almost perfection for me
DeleteGreat theme Sam! I wish I was coordinated enough to ice skate! I loved On Thin Ice by Julie Cross!
ReplyDeleteLindy@ A Bookish Escape
I am such a Juniper Falls fan. I would love Cross to write more books for that series.
DeleteI love the photo of you happily ice skating :D I have to admit that ice skating is not my thing in the slightest. I can do it, but I hate it, and that has a lot to do with me hating all things connected to the colder months and winter :p Which explains why I have read none of these books >.> But I LOVE watching figure skating, maybe because my two older sisters did it when we all lived at home and I was mesmerised every time I went to their shows/performances.
ReplyDeleteAhhhh, my carefree youth. My friends and I would tool around at a local rink. I guess it was the natural progression for me after all the time I spent at the roller rink, before I hit my teen years. I abhor winter, but I love hockey books for some odd, unknown reason
DeleteWhat a cool topic! Check Please -- the cover is just so cute! AND look at you skating up a storm!
ReplyDeleteCheck, Please! was adorable. Really cute and fun and sweet. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment
Deleteoh I like the top ten one! So pretty and modern. This post reminds me I have to take my kids ice staking :) they love it!
ReplyDeleteI hope you guys get out to the rink
DeleteFunny I didn't recall that The year we Fell Down took part in winter! ;-)
ReplyDeleteThey play hockey in the book, so, skating. I especially loved when Corey got back on the ice
DeleteLook at you go Sam! It never gets that cold in Australia where lakes or ponds freeze over so I'd be terrified in case I fell through the ice! How can you tell if it's safe enough to skate on?
ReplyDeleteEven though it's summer here and we're on fire, I've been hunting for wintery type reads. Nothing like reading about snow to cool you down. I read Bittersweet a few years ago and quite liked it so will be checking a few of these out, and soon before it heats up!
My aunt's pond was pretty shallow, so she would walk out and see how it went, but the one in town was monitored by someone from park services. They hung a ball, when it was safe for skating. I grabbed Bittersweet after reading Ockler's last release, Summer of Chasing Mermaids. I really enjoy her books, and have been working my way through her backlist.
DeleteI never ice skated but now roller skating...every Friday & Saturday night!!
ReplyDeleteKaren @ For What It's worth
I roller skated all the time as a kid. Everyone on my street did. So much fun
DeleteI had no idea there even were so many books about skating! I can only think of one that I've read---another girl hockey player book from Entangled Teen (but I can't think of the title).
ReplyDeleteNicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction
I have a lot more. I love hockey books. Hmm, now I have to figure out what book you read.
DeleteWell, look at you! You look like a much better skater than I ever was!
ReplyDeleteWe used to like to go to the skating rink nearby when I was a teen, and I grew up skating on my aunt's pond, but I could not do anything too fancy.
DeleteThis is such a great topic, I had no idea there were so many books about skating, I need to read more! I really liked Cold Day in the Sun :D
ReplyDeleteI have read a lot of books with skating, because I love hockey books so much. Cold Day int he Sun is an absolute favorite of mine. Such a feel good book
