Top Ten Tuesday: Books Make Great Gifts!

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is...

Books Make Great Gifts!

When I was reflecting on this topic, I realized how lucky I am. First of all, I prefer electronic copies of books, so I don't get sad about not getting physical ARCs and whatnot (though, some of those boxes are amazing). Then, I am lucky enough to get a lot of new and newer releases via NetGalley, Edelweiss, and my public library system. Therefore, I struggle with the original topic, but I thought of listing some of the ARC requests I was rejected for, so maybe if someone is looking for a gift for me, they can keep these books in mind. Without further ado, here are some books I was rejected for, but still want to read.

Have you been rejected for
a book you still hope to read?
Let us know in the comments!

  1. I was lucky enough to get Start Here and I really liked it. It gets you in the feels at time though! I was also hoping for Of Curses and Kisses, but was turned down for that one as well.

    1. S&S is hit or miss for me. I was hoping the eLibrary would get the Doller books, since they have many of her other titles, but it's not there yet. My library always gets Menon's books, so I know I will be able to read it at some point. I just wanted to read it early.

    1. Both those books seem like a perfect fit for me. I hope one of us gets to read them. Merry Christmas to you too!

  4. I don't read ARCs so I don't have that rejection issue! Hope you get a few good reads from Santa!

    1. I could never finance my reading habit without blogging. Nobody every gifts me books, though Tanya sent me an Amazon GC once, because she knows I am all about the ebooks. But, my family? Nope

  5. I'm sorry! The approvals and rejections are pretty random. I think the only two of these I requested were Breath Like Water and Curses and Kisses, and I did get approved, but I have been rejected for many books (107 on NG to be exact. RIP The Map From Here to There....)
Hope you have a wonderful holiday with your daughter!

    1. My rejection for Breath Like Water said the book had already been published. 🙄 I usually can get Inkyard, so it was surprising, but whatever. S&S are hit or miss for me, but my library gets all Menon's books. I am lucky I can always get Macmillan titles, because all the eLibraries are boycotting them. I hope you enjoy have the children home was well!

  6. Haha, that meme is me. I only had books and a laptop charger on my Christmas list. Sorry you got rejected for these. I hope you get a chance to read them eventually!

    1. Well, you had such a short list of requests, I hope you get everything you asked for. Rejection is part of life. You win some, you lose some. I get a lot more approvals than rejections, and I do actually, eventually, read most of the books.

  7. Books do make great gifts. :) I must confess that when my e-ARC request is reject, I kinda no longer want to read the book. *covers face in shame* I'm really excited about Of Curses and Kisses. How am I supposed to resist to a Beauty and the Beast retelling?!

    Merry Christmas!

    1. It's funny, Disney ALWAYS rejects me, so I was pouty and vowed to read, but not review the book. Then, I read some really good ones, and not only did I review them, I featured them on my blog. I can't punish the author for a rejection that came from someone else. Not only is Curses a retelling, it's set in a boarding school, AND Menon wrote it, and I love her books.

  8. Ahh what an amazing list, there are SO many books I want to read here. My number one has to be Time of Our Lives, but I'm also so curious about Of Curses and Kisses and Layoverland! I hope you'll get a chance to read these soon! :)

    1. I adored both books by the Siegemund-Broka duo, and I will always try to get their books. My library seems to like them too, because they get them very quickly.

  9. Books are the gift I'm treating myself with for Christmas, as usual (or well, technically, my parents' gift, since they gave me the money). Boo for all those rejections - how dare they?! I hope Santa will surprise you with something from your list! Merry Christmas!

    1. I used to get really sad about rejections, but I get a lot of approvals, so I try to focus on that. I can't wait to see what books you spend your Christmas cash on.

  10. This is a great twist on the topic. I don't get a lot of books as gifts because most of my IRL friends/family have no idea what I already have lol

This was my first year not going to a book conference and I rarely get approved for YA arc's so the library has been my go to this year.

    1. I read over 400 books a year, and not one of my family members ever gets me an Amazon card so I can buy some. It dumbfounds me, because they complain, that they can't think of anything to get me. This was my first year not going to a conference, but it's because I hardly ever read the print ARCs. I feel like for every approval I get, and believe it or not, I read most of the books I get rejected for.

    1. I can't really read physical books, otherwise, I would have people, who would lend me books. I will just keep my fingers crossed that the eLibrary gets them at some point.

  13. Oh, Layoverland. It sucks getting rejected when you're really interested in a book but oh well. BIG SIGH. Here's to hoping you'd get some of these ARCs at some point.

  16. I think you highlighted Layoverland in one of your Wednesday posts and I thought it sounded pretty cool, I can see why you still want to read that one. (But booo on being rejected for an ARC. That sucks.)

    1. I did, because I do really want to read the book. That publisher is 50/50 for me. The rejections hurt a little, but I still get a lot of approvals.

  17. Getting turned down for an ARC is always a little bruising to the ego, even when you know there's a lot that goes into their decisions. :-)

    1. There are certain publishers, who give me everything, some who give me NOTHING (Disney, Hachette), and some that are hit or miss. I still get a lot of approvals.

  18. I don't get too many rejections anymore but the ones I get sting really bad. I haven't read any of these but I hope you found one or two under the tree.

    1. I get a lot more approvals than rejections, but oddly enough, I eventually end up reading most of the books. I used to be bitter in the beginning, but I accept it more easily these days

  19. That's a bummer you got rejected for these. All of them sound perfect for you. I hope you'll be able to read them all at some point.

    1. I used to request tons of books, all over the spectrum, but since, have started narrowing my requests to my go-to genre and books I really believe are good fits for me. I actually did a review post, featuring two 5-star reads, which were both rejections for me. I am glad I finally had the opportunity to read them. The books above, which have been released, still are not available at my library, but I know I should be able to get the Mennon and Wibbs/Broka books. The library tends to carry their books.

  20. Why anyone would reject you on Edelweiss confuses me completely! I have seen of Curses and Kisses around and people seem to be highly anticipating it. Whenever you do get your hands on it, I hope it will be a good read for you. And I hope you got some books or giftcards under your tree this year x

    1. I understand rejections. You can't get them all. I am confident that book will be at the library, because they have purchased all of Menon's other books. I will read it, some day
