Can't Wait Wednesday! (But on Monday)

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

I am combining CWW with Books From the Backlog hosted by Carole at Carole's Random Life in Books. This will allow me to feature some newly "rediscovered" books, which I plan on reading, alongside a new release.

This week I can't wait for:

NO! It's not Wednesday, yet. (Sorry folks!) I have a blog tour on Wednesday this week, and you know I love doing these posts, so I just moved it. Sorry if you were confused.

Layoverland
Gabby Noone
Age/Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal, Romance
Publisher: Razorbill
Release Date: January 21, 2020
Goodreads
Two teens, one stuck atoning for her sins and one destined for heaven, fall in love in purgatory in this darkly hilarious and heartfelt rom-com, perfect for fans of The Good Place.

Beatrice Fox deserves to go straight to hell. At least, that's what she thinks. On her last day on Earth, she ruined the life of the person she loves most--her little sister, Emmy. So when Bea awakens from a fatal car accident to find herself on an airplane headed for a mysterious destination, she's confused, to say the least. Once on the ground, Bea receives some truly harrowing news: not only is she in purgatory, but she has been chosen to join the Memory Experience team. If she wants another shot at heaven, she'll have to use her master manipulation skills to help 5,000 souls suss out what's keeping them from moving on.

There's just one slight problem. Bea's first assigned soul is Caleb, the boy who caused her accident, and the last person Bea would ever want to send to the pearly gates. But as much as Bea would love to see Caleb suffer for dooming her to a seemingly endless future of listening to other people's problems, she can't help but notice that he's kind of cute, and sort of sweet, and that maybe, despite her best efforts, she's totally falling for him. And to make matters worse, he's definitely falling for her. Now, determined to make the most of her time in purgatory, Bea must decide what is truly worth dying for--romance or revenge.
Why I want to read this book

When I first stumbled upon this book, the ROM-COM jumped right out at me. I am always here for a good rom-com, but this one has such an interesting premise on top of that. Two people falling in love in purgatory, who happened to be connected via the accident, which caused Bea's death. Sounds complicated and so, so intriguing. I am very interested in seeing what the author did with this concept.

A Matter of Heart
Amy Fellner Dominy
Age/Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Release Date: May 12, 2015
Goodreads
Readers will happily sink into this emotionally grounded, contemporary young adult novel about the sudden end of one girl's Olympic swimming dreams and the struggles she endures before realizing there are many things that define who we are.

Sixteen-year-old Abby Lipman is on track to win the state swim championships and qualify for the Olympic trials when a fainting incident at a swim meet leads to the diagnosis of a deadly heart condition. Now Abby is forced to discover who she is without the one thing that's defined her entire life.
Why I want to read this book

After reading and falling in love with Announcing Trouble, I knew I had to read more from Dominy, and unbeknownst to me, this book was on my TBR from a few years back. On further inspection, it does sound like a great fit for me. I am always interested in reading books that focus on elite athletes, and those who have to deal with great losses. This novel features both those things, and I believe I am in store for a great deal of feels.

  1. Layoverland is right up my alley too Sam! It reminds me of the cover of I'll Meet You There and wouldn't have picked this up if not for your post. Really looking forward to its release! Thanks so much for sharing Sam and putting it on my radar.

    1. Agreed. The cover looks a LOT like I'll Meet You There with that hotel/motel on the front. Glad I got this one on your radar.

    1. The last time I moved my CWW, it threw people for a loop, and I didn't want people to be sad, when they realized it was Monday and not Wed. You know? Dominy did a great job with her characters' emotions in the last book I read by her, and this situation is even BIGGER. I'm into it.

  4. Layoverland sounds fun because it's different for me. Woohoo for finding that you already had one of the author's books when you were in the mood for more (I have definitely done that before). :)

    1. The concept has me really intrigued, and there's what sounds like a conflicted, as Bea should want to hate him. I am curious to see how it all plays out.

  7. I have Layoverland in my TBR and it sounds actually fun. Kinda reminds me too of The Afterlife of Holly Chase a bit.. just a tiny bit. As for backlog books, I have a ton of them. I don't think I'll ever have a day when I don't have a backlog book I want to read lol.

    1. Fun = me. My favorite books are the fun ones, because life is too much sometimes. It's my sweet release. I can see shades of Holly Chase in there, with the purgatory type thing. I will also always have backlog books, but I feel like a boss when I read one every week.

    1. That is exactly why I included that disclaimer. Ain't nothing worse, than thinking it Wed, and it's only Monday. *sigh* I think Layoverland has the potential to be great. Fingers crossed.

  16. I have a blog tour Wednesday too, so I'm posting my Wednesday post on Tuesday! What an interesting and unique premise! Layoverland sounds awesome! It looks like I need to add it to my TBR as well :). I hope you end up loving art Sam. Rom-coms are my favorite! A Matter of Heart sounds good, but it'll probably be an emotional, tug at your heartstrings type of read! I enjoyed this author too :). Great picks Sam!

    1. I am so excited that someone thought we needed more rom-coms, because they have definitely improved my reading year. There have always been those raunchy, teen-boy type romances that are rom-coms, but I just want something really fun, and I am glad to see more of that.

  18. Layoverland is one I'd have skipped past and not stopped for a single second to find out what it's about. That cover is doing it no favours... But it sounds so good! I love the idea of the premise! I'm actually, seriously, 100% tempted to grab this one when it releases!

Glad you still decided to talk about the books you're excited to read, I love these posts. Layoverland sounds brilliant and I hadn't heard of it. I'll have to check out some reviews when it's out. And A Matter of Heart sounds good, emotional but interesting.

    1. I put a disclaimer in there. You know, you come on a Monday, and I make you think it's Wednesday, and then you realize it's Monday. I just couldn't do that people. I loved A Matter of Heart. I saw mixed reviews for it, but I enjoyed it. We lost a student to HCM, back when I was teaching, so maybe I connected on a different level because of that.

  22. Haha! That is a very good way to get all your posts in! Both of these are new to me and I am intrigued by them. New ones to add to my TBR. Yay!! :)

So, call it my wish to the universe for an ARC approval or whatever. All I know is I am not passing up an opportunity to put it out there.
