My Week in Review
More heat, humidity, and rain. You know, the dog days of summer. I am sort of living vicariously through my daughter's messages, as she is at Lollapalooza this weekend. I always loved that festival, and the kid even attended back in 1994 in utero. The best part of it being at Grant Park in Chicago is the food. There are so many amazing vendors, and one thing I found fantastic the last time I went was the rainbow ice cream. Sloth was actually thinking about the last time he was there too.
On the Web:
Not sure how many of you have seen it, but #BookWish was blowing up last week. I didn't go to any cons this year, so my physical ARCs are mostly early 2018 and older. Then when I would see something that was wished for, it was signed and personalized. Even if I am not participating, I think it's great.

I feel in love with Jessi Kirby recently, and couldn't pass up the great ebook sale S&S was having. I was also able to nab the only JES book I have not read. So, yeah, I bought some books.
Bought
- In Honor by Jessi Kirby
- Moonglass by Jessi Kirby
- The Comeback Season by Jennifer E. Smith
It's always somewhat monumental when Harper does an EW drop, because they seem to publish a good percentage of books on my TBR. I was over the moon to get the new Kasie West, and that approval pretty much left me smiling for the entire day.
Edelweiss/NetGalley
- America's Sweetheart by Jessica Lemmon
- The Accidental Beauty Queen by Teri Wilson
- The Geography of Lost Things by Jessica Brody
- Since We Last Spoke by Brenda Rufener
- Fame, Fate, and the First Kiss by Kasie West
- A Sky for Us Alone by Kristin Russell
- If You're Out There by Katy Loutzenhiser
What I Read Last Week
I wasn't blown away by any of my books this week, but it was still a great reading week. I checked out First Love after seeing it on some list recently, and it left me a snotty, snotty mess. I was sort of frustrated about the incorrect 80s movie reference, but I got over it.
By the way, the movie was this
NOT this
Sorry, but I take my 80s teen movies quite seriously. Anyhow....
Books:
- My Life Uploaded by Rae Earl - ★★★ 1/2 review
- Losing the Field by Abbi Glines - ★★★ 1/2 review
- How to Breathe Underwater by Vicky Skinner - ★★★★
- To Be Honest by Maggie Ann Martin - ★★★★
- Bishop by Sawyer Bennett - ★★★★ review
- 500 Words or Less by Juleah del Rosario - ★★★★
- Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan - ★★★★ review
- First Love by James Patterson - ★★★★ review
What I Am Currently Reading
I am so in love with The Season. I have been wanting to read this for quite a while. True story. I entered a giveaway and was told I won, but while I thought I won the book, I actually only won a signed bookmark. So, super happy the library had this audiobook, and am really enjoying it.
We Regret to Inform You was one of my CWW picks, and so far, it is as good as I wanted it to be. I love the MC's voice, and the whole hacker girl gang thing is pretty fantastic.
- The Season by Jonah Lisa Dyer (audiobook)
- We Regret to Inform You by Ariel Kaplan
What I Plan to Read
- Giant Days by Non Pratt
- State of Grace by Rachael Lucas
- Rush by Lisa Patton
- The Prodigy by John Feinstein
How was your week?
Let us know in the comments!
#BookWish is awesome isn't it? And love the pic of the deer coming to visit. :)
ReplyDeleteI'll have to look at Jessi Kirby's other books since I really liked The secret History Of Us.
And wow seeing Some Kind of Wonderful and Say Anything there was a nice surprise! I had a thing for Mary Stuart Masterson back in the day lol.
I love that you had a thing for MSM. The 80s and early 90s really did have the best teen movies. My ARC volume decreases drastically with September releases (which I am starting next week), so I hope to read more backlist then. I know Kirby's books are high on my priority list, because I have really been enjoying her books.
DeleteHow cool that your daughter is now experiencing/loving the same festival you did. I imagine you and Sloth are feeling quite nostalgic. :) I hadn't even heard of that JES book. Screwing up 80's movies references? Sacrilege! I'm like you, I'm all about the 80's teen movies so messing those up immediately puts you on my not-to-be-trusted list. I still haven't read Losing the Field, and don't know if I will. I have such a weird relationship with AG's books. With the Vincent Boys duology and the Rosemary Beach series and I able to recognize they were particularly well written while still totally loving the characters and stories. (I swear, I was obsessed with the Rosemary Beach series for so long.) But with the Field Party series, I was really finding stuff that bugged me and had a hard time getting past it and just enjoying the stories. *sigh* I hate to think that I might be ready to give up on AG. Guess I'll sit back and see what she does next.
ReplyDeleteI had bought her the ticket, and was invited by plane fare and the $400 ticket, when I am not really into too many of the bands is a bit of overkill. I was listening to First Love at work and I just stood up and started ranting about the movie thing. It really bugged me. I liked the story concept for losing the field. All the heroes in this series have been football superstars, and taking a look at one of them losing that status was interesting. She went for drama versus deep exploration, but I was still entertained, which is how I usually feel when I read her books. Everybody has something that pushes their buttons, Glines hasn't hit any of mine yet.
DeleteYour daughter sounds like she is having a great time out there. I love all the new books you picked up this week. I hope you have a wonderful week.
DeleteShe is taking advantage of living in a city. She would rather be living in NYC, but she is making the best of her situation.
DeleteNice new reads! All totally new to me ones but I hope you enjoy them all!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love that picture with the deer! I saw that on Twitter this week as well! It amazes me how calm he his with the other animals and how calm they are with him too!
Here's my STS
Have a GREAT day!
Old Follower :)
Land of Cuteness is the best!
DeleteI too love the animals sharing the deck. I missed this on Twitter so thanks for sharing. After hearing how much you loved We Regret to Inform You, I can't wait to read it too.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many ugly things on Twitter, but I fill my feed with cute animals. Kaplan's previous book was a hit for me too. She is very funny, but her characters also have a lot of heart.
DeleteThe #BookishWish thing is so cool. If I wasn’t hosting a giveaway, I would participate. I have to be careful with my book budget because I’m broke all the time. I love that deer with its own dog bed. I hope your daughter has fun at the festival. Enjoy your new books!
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I am totally poor. I admire those bigger bloggers, who make a little money from their blog in order to finance giveaways.
DeleteThat's so cool that your daughter is at Lollapalooza. I've always wanted to go to that.
ReplyDeleteI agree about the #BookishWish hashtag. I just saw it for the first time this morning and am thinking I'll join in and try to fill a few wishes.
Lolla is great. I love outdoor festivals. I had been to more Lollapaloozas when they toured, because they would set up in NYC. I only went the one time in Chicago, but I loved Grant Park. The setup was fabulous, and the food was incredible.
DeleteThe #bookwish is very cool. Oh man you got some great new books!! New Kasie West! Me and EW don't really get along so I never get approved for things there but I can't wait to see what you think! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI have been really lucky with Harper. Penguin and Disney - auto rejections! But I guess it's good, that most of the books on my TBR are published by Harper.
DeleteI wish we’d get some rain. It’s been nothing but hot and sunny for weeks! A new Kasie West?! I better start getting caught up!
ReplyDeleteKasie West is one of my favorites, and I am happy that she has been putting out so many books lately.
DeleteRainbow ice cream seems delicious! #BookWish is such a great initiative.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy your new books, Sam.
Happy readings! ;)
Tânia @MyLovelySecret
The rainbow ice cream was delicious. I haven't had it since 2013, but I still remember how good it was.
DeleteI've never been to Lolla and I probs never will. I did get to see all of the fun outfits though!
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to have seen my daughter, but it's way too much money, when there were so few bands I like playing. When we went in 2013 the lineup for off the hook!
DeleteBookwish sounds awesome...and yum that ice cream looks delish. Loving your new haul and that hedgehog is adorable, although I hate seeing them as pets.
ReplyDeleteI don't know, sometimes I wish I was someone's pet, because there are people out there, who lavish vast amounts of love on their pets. Do hedgehogs need a lot of outdoor space? I am not that familiar with their upkeep. I just think they are super cute
DeleteLiving vicariously through your daughter sounds totally reasonable, especially when it's something like Lollapalooza. The heat has been dragging on for too long I want autumn already, I'm stocking up on jumpers and such since they're on sale but I can't wear any of them because of the heat! I did see bookwish blowing up on twitter and was so confused. Like I logged on one day and I felt like I missed something. It is such a cool idea, though. I'm excited for you to read In Honor, I really enjoyed that book and it was emotional and awesome. Also, who doesn't love a good road trip?
ReplyDeleteSweater weather is my sweet spot. Excuse me, I was just dreaming about fall. I have faith I will love the Kirby books. So far, one 4 and two 5-stars for me. That's a good track record
DeleteI love my cheesy 80s movie and Some Kind of Wonderful is like one of my fav, fav, favorites! =) Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteMary
Mary – my Sunday Roundup #30!
DeleteIt really was a great movie, and reading that museum date scene in First Love made me nostalgic for it
DeleteI only caught a few tweets about #BookWish and was kind of confused about what it was exactly! The animal pictures are too adorable!!! My dogs would never be that calm around a deer. Yoda isn't even calm around cats...or other dogs...or people...He's kind of a jerk.
ReplyDeleteI was really surprised by that picture. Maybe the deer is sort of domesticated, like the squirrels on my college campus. They would walk up to us on the grass, and take food from our hands.
DeleteFirst the rainbow ice cream seems so cool! Then you will read Non Pratt???? I wonder what you'll think of her book as she was at YALC and seemed super bubbly and friendly!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, my daughter was the one eating the ice cream, but I am reading Non Pratt and enjoying the book so far.
DeleteLoved that the deer gets his own bed! So cute! I also love the hedgehog pic. I'm a sucker for any animal really. I read Jessi Kirbi's Moonglass and In Honor a few years back. I think I liked In Honor Better.
ReplyDeleteWe've been having super hot weather in Southern California. About a month ago we had it get to 118 and I don't remember it ever being that hot. We're getting another heat wave this week with 107 predicted a few days. I'm so over Summer when it's that hot. I guess you have the humidity to deal with. Let's hope we all stay cool, right. I'm looking forward to cooler temps. :)
I know you have that dry heat and there is something to it, as I learned when I visited CA, but I will take the humidity, which brings rain, and keeps us from having fires. I remember dealing with that one summer when I was living in FL. It was sort of awful and scary
DeleteYour weather sounds just like mine was this week. The weekend has been sunny though and I've been in the pool a lot. That deer is beautiful. I'm thinking he's been coming around there since he was young to be so calm.
ReplyDeleteMy Sunday Post
It's pretty much hot as hades, and you sort of swim through the air. Not a fan. That's what I was thinking about the deer too.
DeleteI want to have some deer come to visit! I could even be convinced to buy a bed for them although I don't think my dogs would be as friendly as the other animals in the pic. Lots of new books this week! I hope you enjoy them all. I didn't realize that your daughter was the same age as my oldest. I can't remember if I went to any concerts while pregnant that year but I do remember going to one the night before I had my youngest. I take my 80s teen movie refrences seriously as well!
ReplyDeleteWhat concert did your daughter "attend"? The headliners were Smashing Pumpkins when I "took" Kiersten with me. I kept combing reviews for the book, and I guess I was the only reader, who noticed the error. Granted, I am older than the target audience.
DeleteOh, I was so excited to see Fame, Fate and the First Kiss---I had to rush over and get it! I love Kasie West!!
ReplyDeleteNicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction
I saw someone on Twitter talking about how she was having trouble downloading it, and I stressed for the rest of the work day, until I could get home and request it.
DeleteIt sounds like you had a fun week! Bookish Wishes has definitely blown up! It's pretty overwhelming! I hope you love all your new books! A Sky For Us Alone looks really good!
ReplyDeleteI am really interested in Sky For Us to see how the authors tackles the opioid crisis in it.
DeleteOMG that ice cream looks so good. And that deer in the bed! That's adorable. I also got the new Kasie West book and I'm excited about it. I might read it sooner rather than later because I need a fluffy read right now. :D I hope you enjoy your new books, Sam!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week. =)
Alyssa @ The Eater of Books!
After 5 years, I still remember how good that ice cream is. I was jealous that Kiersten was eating it without me. The last book I read too far ahead (by accident), I never wrote a review for, and I loved the book. Guess I should circle back to that.
DeleteI hope your daughter is having a great time at the festival! Yes, we just have to enjoy those summer days while we have them. It sounds like you read some good books and yay for Harper being an amazing publisher and releasing good books. They're one of my favourite publishers <3
ReplyDeleteI am a little bit sad I didn't go to any festivals this year, but the weather has been unbearable, so it's better I didn't. Right? Harper really does occupy most of my TBR. I think Macmillan is second, and they are pretty nice to me too.
DeleteWhat did you think of the Abbi Glines book? I read the first in The Field Party series and always meant to go back but didn't. :/
ReplyDeleteI hope your daughter has an amazing time at the festival!
I like them. They are classic Glines - soapy and a bit over the top. When I really want to tune out of life, they are the perfect books to do it to. The new group of characters in the Field Party books seems promising. I enjoyed the Hero's story more than the heroine's, but overall, it was enjoyable.
