In this romantic road trip story perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen and Morgan Matson, a teen girl discovers the value of ordinary objects while learning to forgive her absent father. When I first saw this cover, I knew I wanted to read this book.
After Ali’s father passes away, he leaves his one and only prized possession—a 1968 Firebird convertible—to his daughter. But Ali doesn’t plan on keeping it. Not when it reminds her too much of all her father’s unfulfilled promises. So when she finds a buyer three hundred miles up the Pacific coast willing to pay enough money for the car to save her childhood home, Ali can’t wait to get going. Except Ali has no idea how to drive a stick shift. But guess who does?
Ali’s ex-boyfriend, Nico. And Nico has other plans.
He persuades Ali that instead of selling the car, they should “trade up” the items they collect on their trip to eventually reach the monetary amount Ali needs. Agreeing with Nico’s crazy plan, Ali sets off on a unique adventure that is unlike anything she ever could have expected.
And it’s through Ali’s travels, through the strangers she meets and the things that they value—and why they value them—that Ali eventually comes to understand her father and how his life may not have been as easy and carefree as she previously thought. Because just like the seemingly insignificant objects Ali collects, not everything is exactly as it appears.
- The cover has this vibe, that makes me want to know more.
- I like Jessica Brody books. I have enjoyed her past books, and want to read more.
- The title eludes to loss, and we all know how much I like a good grief and lost book.
- It sounds like the main character will take quite a journey, physically and emotionally, and that always makes for a great story for me.
- ROAD TRIP! I never get to go anywhere, so I love when books take me places.
- A road trip with an ex sounds like a fabulous set up.

This one sounds like it has a lot going for it. Seems like Ali has a lot to comes to term with when it comes to her father.
ReplyDeleteI am really interested in that part of the story. I feel like it will deliver a good gut punch.

DeleteI love Jessica Brody and it's been a couple years since I've read one of her books. I'm really excited about this one too because I love road trip novels.
ReplyDeleteBrody keeps it interesting. She is sort of in a group with Katie Cotugno for me. I don't always love everything they do in the book, but they do it well and I enjoy the reading experience.
DeleteI don't think I have heard of this one, but it sounds so interesting. going to add this to my GR
ReplyDeleteI hope you get a chance to read it!

ReplyDeleteOne can never go wrong with a fictional road trip.
DeleteI don't read enough road trip books, and I like the idea of the main character meeting all these people and finding out why things are important to them.
ReplyDeleteI don't get to travel enough, so I love road trip books.
DeleteNice! I love a good road trip book :)
ReplyDeleteI have yet to be disappointed by a road trip book.
DeleteYay! A road trip book! It has been a while since I read one of those. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteAll this talk of road trips has me wanting to do a TTT for road trip books.
DeleteThe blurb had me at Sarah Dessen (because I haven't yet read anything by Morgan Matson or Jessica Brody yet, oops) and yes! A roadtrip with an ex is such a promising premise. I'm intrigued.
ReplyDeleteDessen is one of my YA queens, but I also love Matson. Her books have been going towards the too long side lately, but they are still so wonderful.
DeleteGreat pick! I've been looking for road trip books, so I'm glad you featured this one. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's like kismet, since this week I am doing road trip books for TTT, which made me realize how many books I need to read, which feature road trips.
DeleteRoad trip book? I want to read it so much I didn't even know this was coming out. Need it!
ReplyDeleteI am so in love with road trip books. Assembling my TTT list of road trip books reminded me of that love, and also had me adding a bunch of older YA road trip books to my list. When I think of adult contemporary, one really stands out - The Debt by Karina Halle. You can totally see her roots as a travel writer in that book as she vividly took me through the Highlands.
