Top Ten Tuesday: Foodie Books

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week's topic is...

Ten Book Featuring Foodies!

I have read many books, which featured food, and made me hungry, but these books didn't only feature food, but also featured characters who were foodies and prepared food.

North of Happy
Adi Alsaid
Series: n/a
Publisher: Harlequin Teen

Carlos was supposed to join the family business, but after his brother's murder, he set out to chase his dream of being a chef. Each chapter in this book starts with a recipe, and there is a LOT of cooking. I really wished I was there to taste some of the food described in this book.

Bittersweet
Sarah Ockler
Series: n/a
Publisher: Simon Pulse

Hudson was a once figure skater and the cupcake queen. She would create these amazing cupcakes for her family's diner, and each one was described at the beginning of the chapter. Cupcakes are my favorite, so I really loved reading about all her creations.

Kids Like Us
Hilary Reyl
Series: n/a
Publisher: Farrar Straus Giroux

Martin loved cooking, as it was a way he connected to his father. With his father out of the picture, he found great comfort in preparing the dishes he once made along side his father. He cooked both savory and sweet with inspiration from Julia Child, and it all sounds mouthwatering.

Artificial Sweethearts
Julie Hammerle
Series: North Pole, Minnesota,
Publisher: Entangled: Crush

Tinka was an budding baker, and she would bake when she was stressed or trying to atone for some of her actions. I loved seeing what she would whip up, but totally got the feels when she recreated a dessert that was very special to Sam, as it reminded him of his mom.

Kissing Max Holden
Katy Upperman
Series: n/a
Publisher: Swoon Reads

Jill aspired to attend a culinary school, and was always honing her skills in this book. Girl baked A LOT, but food also served to sooth the characters and as a way for them to bond.

Who's That Girl
Blair Thornburgh
Series: n/a
Publisher: HarperTeen

This group of teens were holding weekly bake sales in order to raise money for their alternative prom. Therefore, we got to spend quite a bit of time in Zach's kitchen as he created sweet confections for the sales. These scenes not only let us observe his kitchen skills, they were also where Nattie and Zach had some real heart to hearts.

Wicked Like a Wildfire
Lana Popović
Series: Hibiscus Daughter, #1
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books

This book features a magical family bakery, and Popović describes the treats so vividly. These are not your normal, everyday baked items either. They were high-end and unique and sounded ah-mazing.

To All The Boys I've Loved Before
Jenny Han
Series: To All The Boys I've Loved Before, #1
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books

Lara Jean was always baking something up for us in these books. She knew the way to anyone's heart was through their stomach, and she obliged with cakes and cookies and lots of sweet treats.

The Art of Lainey
Paula Stokes
Series: The Art of Lainey, #1
Publisher: HarperTeen

Micah was employed by Lainey's family as a cook, but he aspired to be a pastry chef. Between Micah's dreams and many scenes taking place in a restaurant, we heard about quite a bit of food.

What Happened to Goodbye
Sarah Dessen
Series: n/a
Publisher: Penguin

McLean's father traveled around the country trying to save failing restaurants. Therefore, a large portion of this story takes place in the restaurant discussing among many things, the food prepared there.

  1. I love books containing food - a fact that makes me incredibly sad that I've only read 1 out of 10 of these! :( North of Happy sounds particularly food-alicious. That's cool that every chapter begins with a recipe, but I feel like that also makes it a book you shouldn't read when you're hungry. Also the cupcakes aspect of Bittersweet is standing out to me. Cupcakes are probably my favorite dessert. Great list, Sam!

    1. I really enjoyed North of Happy, because, well, it was another grief book, and you know me. And LOTS of cooking and eating. I am an Ockler fan, and Bittersweet was a fun and sweet story. Between the cupcakes and the figure skating, I was pretty much all in. BTW, cupcakes are my favorite dessert.

    1. There are a lot of gems up there, and some are older, so you can probably get them at the library. Hope you get to some of them.

  3. Oh wow! Great picks! And so many too! Lol! I struggled soooo much with this one! The books I read hardly let the characters take a lunch break it seems! Though I know there were plenty of times they ate something I liked, I just couldn't remember which book specifically it came from! LOL!

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

    1. I had a hard time thinking of specific food items, but I liked turning it to focus on MCs who cook, because I feel like they are popping up more and more lately.

  4. This is so weird. I commented this morning but apparently it never posted? Something you said in your comment on my blog made me think you hadn't seen mine here. And when I just came to check, sure enough, no comment. Guess the internet ate it. *sigh* Let me try again... about 12 hours later.

I loved all the baking and cooking Jill did and how it wasn't just her passion and her future but also where she found comfort and was able to set aside her troubles and just focus on the task at hand. And I would love to be able to actually see some of the treats in Wicked Like a Wildfire. They sound spectacular!

    1. I thought the author did such an amazing job with imagery in Wicked. I felt like I could see, taste, and feel things when I read that book. It wasn't just the baking in Max Holden, it was how food was used to bring people together. I loved it.

    1. This week's prompt was another tough one, because I remember food being in books, but I cannot remember the specifics. That's why I went to cooking characters instead.

    1. I am Dessen trash, but this was one of the really good ones. There was a run of 2 or 3 that were not as good as the rest, but still ok. I really enjoyed North of Happy, because it was a grief story and I love them.

  11. I'm not much of a cook, but I love to bake as a stress reliever, so I can relate to characters who find solace in doing so. There are a lot of books on this list that I'm adding to my TBR now: North of Happy, Who's That Girl, The Art of Lainey, and Wicked Like a Wildfire all sound really good!

    1. See, I don't cook or bake, but I like to eat. I like Alsaid and Stokes a lot, and both Wicked and Who's that Girl were strong debuts for me.
