It's Monday! What Are You Reading? - May 15, 2017

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date. Jen Vincent, Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee of Unleashing Readers decided to give It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus.

This post is for sharing what I read last week, what I am currently reading, and what I plan to read.

What I Read Last Week

This weekend was the culmination of the past four years, and I really enjoyed my daughter's graduation. It was so different from my own. They marched onto the field to live music played by the Brazilian Ensemble, which was so much more festive than Pomp and Circumstance. I went to my state's flagship school, and there were almost as many total graduates at my daughter's ceremony as there were in just the electrical engineering department at mine. Her's was so much more intimate and personal, and I enjoyed it throughly. Below, is a picture of her cap with a quote from ACOMAF and the last stack of books she got for me.

Back to the reading, no bad reads last week, but I was a little disappointed with Wayfarer. I loved when Etta and Nicholas were together, and they spent the majority of this book separated. They had great, separate adventures, but it was not the same for me. One surprise read was Dairy Queen. I had seen it on someone's Top Ten Tuesday as an example of sports done right. They had it on Overdrive, so I checked it out. It was utterly adorable (pun intended) and delightful. I really enjoyed the look at the life of a farming family, and thought DJ was hilarious.

What I Am Currently Reading

Right now, I am reading Liberty and listening to the second Dairy Queen book, The Off Season. DJ, I am glad to report, is still bringing smiles to my face.

What I Plan to Read

I have a few anticipated reads lined up for the week. Making it Right is the final book in the Most Likely To series, and I think it's going to be the best story yet, as this character is the most complicated of the three the series follows. I had requested Be True to Me, because Griffin knocked my socks off with The Unfinished Life of Addison Stone. Her new book is set during the bicentennial summer, and I have some vague, but fond memories of our celebratory block party that year. Visions of bike decorating, playing in the fire hydrant, and wearing the bicentennial quarter on a ribbon around my neck are flashing through my mind, and I am eager to revisit that time period with Griffin. I requested my final read, Amish Guys Don't Call, on a whim, because it sounds like a like of fun.

  1. Be True to me is on my TBR list. Graduations-- huge universities are the worst when it comes to graduations. Didn't go to mine or my daughter's. Just a mob scene. Congratulations to you and your daughter, though!

    1. Thank you! I am glad I got to go to a mid-size college graduation to see it done right. I am feeling tons of nostalgia for Be True to Me. Fingers crossed it's good.

  2. Congratulations on your daughter's accomplishment!

I've always been interested in Dairy Queen, but I somehow missed reading it. I really must, one day.

    1. I listened to book 2 today on the ride home from SU (little over 4 hours). This book is actually a little deep, but it still has all that charm and even more family love in it. I am really enjoying the series. Overdrive doesn't have book 3, so I will have to see if the library has the physical book, because I really want to finish the series.

    1. I know I will definitely read the 3rd one, because it completes DJ and Brian's arc. Not sure if I will do the 4th. It depends on availability, because I am on a book buying ban (I have so many unread books!!!)

    1. I cannot say that I have read a lot of books about a dairy farming family, and I think I like the second one even more, because it focuses a lot more on the whole family, and I kind love them.

    1. I am such a Bybee fan, and I am dying for Jo's story. I should be starting it tomorrow-ish. The second Dairy Queen book is even more charming, because it's very family-centric. It's really beautiful the way their love is overflowing in the face of a family tragedy.

    1. I need to remember who's post I saw Dairy Queen on and thank them, because it's very sweet and heartwarming. I was all onboard with the overall message of The Unlikelies -- use kindness as a weapon. That's awesome.

    1. Wayfarer just needed to have Etta and Nicholas together for more of the book. They were such an awesome couple. I missed them. I am loving the Dairy Queen series. I am very happy that Overdrive had it.

    1. I don't know how I am old enough to be the mother of a college grad, but I am. Dairy Queen is older, from before I started pleasure reading again, and I am glad it got on my radar, because it made me very happy.

    1. Yes, the cap was very awesome. I just kept staring as she hand painted the quote, and she kept telling me, "62K a year for a BFA....." Sarcasm runs in the family.

  12. I hope you enjoy the books you're currently reading and the ones you're planning to read this week. I'm currently reading an ARC from netgalley (my first ARC from the site) and loving it. Yay, I'm so excited. I cannot put it down. :)

    1. She graduated from the Visual and Performing Arts College, so there were some really impressive caps in the crowd. I loved the quote she selected, and could not believe how she could paint it on like that. I cannot even write on paper that nicely. I am about 60% through Jo's book, and Bybee is giving her a great storyline.

  14. Congrats on your daughter's graduation! How exciting. And what she did to her cap... amazing! The cover of Liberty is making me laugh for some reason. I don't know what it is but it makes me smile. :) Interesting time period for Be True to Me. I remember that summer, too. Red, white and blue *everything.*
