2017 Reading Challenges

In the past, I have just haphazardly read. Picking up any book I wished. Sometimes, just reading the next book cued on my Kindle, but this year, I thought it would be fun to participate in a reading challenge. I will be participating in the five reading challenges listed below.

General Reading Challenges

The Goodreads Reading Challenge is one I have always participated in, as it is simply just setting a number of books to read. My goal is always five books a week or 260 books total.

The Alphabet Soup Challenge is to read a book starting with each letter of the alphabet. There is a little wiggle room with the more difficult letters (Q, X, Z), but otherwise, just 26 books – one for each letter of the alphabet.

The Debut Author Challenge is to read as many middle grades, young adult, and new adult books by 2017 debut authors. I have a lot of Swanky Seventeens on my TBR, so I am looking forward to this one.

Pop Sugar Reading Challenge

The Pop Sugar Reading Challenge entails finding a book that fits one of the 40 descriptions. This was a little time consuming, but I really enjoyed the hunt for the appropriate book. I added the extra level to the challenge, in that most of my books must be owned or borrowed (library, Overdrive, Hoopla). My list is shown below, but as with most things in life, it is subject to change.
**Note: I do not do rereads, therefore, I selected a book by an author who always makes me smile

Monthly Motif Reading Challenge

The last challenge I signed up for is Monthly Motif Reading Challenge. This challenge is similar to Pop Sugar in that you are given a theme to guide your book choice, but it differs, as you have to follow the specific theme for each month. There is some overlap with Pop Sugar, therefore, I may use one title to fulfill both challenges, but my objective is to have a unique book for each if possible. The themes are shown below, and I have not selected all the books, since I may have more books to select from as we approach that particular month.

JANUARY – Diversify Your Reading

Kick the reading year off right and shake things up. Read a book with a character (or written by an author) of a race, religion, or sexual orientation other than your own.
Labyrinth Lost (I have actually done my post for this one)

FEBRUARY – Undercover Thriller

Read a book involving spies, detectives, private investigators, or a character in disguise
Poison Study

MARCH – Time Traveler
Read a book set in a different dimension, a book in which time travel is involved or a dystopian or science fiction book where reality looks very different than what we’re used to.

APRIL – Award Winners

Read a book that has won a literary award or a book written by an author who has been recognized in the bookish community.

MAY – Book to Movie or Audio

Read a book that has a movie based off of it. For an extra challenge, see the movie or listen to the audio book as well.

JUNE – Destination Unknown

Read a book in which the character(s) take a trip, travel somewhere, go on a quest, or find themselves on a journey toward something.

JULY – Believe the Unbelievable

This month it’s all about fantasy. Epic fantasy, urban fantasy, fairytales, magic, etc.

AUGUST – Seasons, Elements, & Weather

Read a book in which the season, the elements, or the weather plays a role in the story.

SEPTEMBER – Creepy, Chilling, & Frightful

Cozy mystery ghost stories, paranormal hauntings, murder mysteries, weird and scary creatures- it’s up to you!

OCTOBER– Games, Challenges, & Contests
Read a book that involves a game of some sort. Video games, war games, psychological mess-with-your-mind games, characters who participate in a contest, or a story in which the character takes on a challenge.

NOVEMBER – Last Chance
Read a book you’ve been meaning to get to all year but haven’t yet or read the last book in a series you started.

DECEMBER – Picking Favorites

Read a book by one of your favorite authors or read a book that Girlxoxo has recommended this year.

Are you participating in any reading challenges? Do you have any suggested
books for my challenges?
